Form 1فَازَ4 senses · 2 main
maṣdarفَوْزٌmuḍāriʿيَفُوزُ

Core sense — he attained, gained, or won good; he escaped; he perished, he diedgenerated

1.1figurative · مجازhe attained it, gained it, or won itفَازَ بِهِ

maṣdar فَوْزٌ, مَفَازٌ and مَفَازَةٌ.

He attained, gained, or won good, or good fortune, or what he desired or sought. He met with that for which one would be regarded with a wish to be in the like condition, without its being desired that it should pass away from him. He became far from what was disliked or evil. He succeeded. He won the victory.

[He had his arrow drawn, or] his arrow came forth [from the رِبَابَة] in the game called المَيْسِر; and, said of an arrow, it won, or came forth before its fellow [or fellows in that game].

Said of good, or good fortune, or of reward. It also means: he took it away, he went away with it.

Lane cites “Bd in iii. 182” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.1.1he became safe from it, he escaped itفَازَ مِنهُ

Said of evil, or of punishment.

a happy end belongs to the one who gains reward and escapes punishmentطُوبَى لِمَنْ فَازَ بِالثَّوَابِ وَفَازَ مِنَ العِقَابِ

on this sense He became safe, or secure; he escaped.

1.2figurative · مجازhe perished; he diedفَازَ

.

فَوَّزٌ has the same meaning, so that this verb carries two opposite meanings.

But IB says that, according to some, it is not used in this sense unless it is preceded by another phrase, as in this example: مَاتَ فُلَانٌ وَفَوَّزَ فُلَانٌ بَعْدَهُ [Such a one died and such a one died after him].

According to others, فوّز means he came to be in the مَفَازَة [or state of temporary safety] which lies between the present life and the life to come. [This last meaning is given in the A.]

Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception.

4:73
وَلَئِنْ أَصَـٰبَكُمْ فَضْلٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَيَقُولَنَّ كَأَن لَّمْ تَكُنۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُۥ مَوَدَّةٌ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا

But if good fortune comes to you from Allah, they would be sure to say - as if there had never been Ties of affection between you and them - "Oh! I wish I had been with them; a fine thing should I then have made of it!"

33:71
يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَـٰلَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَمَن يُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا

That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: He that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the highest achievement.

Nounمَفَازَةٌ4 senses · 2 main

Core sense — a place of safety, or escape; a waterless desert; a place of perditiongenerated

1by no means reckon them to be in a place of security from punishmentفَلَا تَحْسِبَنَّهُمْ بِمَفَازَةٍ مِنَ العَذَابِ

So in the Kur-án [3:185]; or, according to Fr, the meaning here is: far from punishment.

A place of safety, security, or escape.

1.1a means of prosperity or success, or of attaining what one seeksمَفْلَحَةٌ

Also a means of attaining what is good, or what puts one in a happy state.

1.2figurative · مجاز

[The state of temporary safety between the present life and the life to come. See form 1, last meaning.]

2figurative · مجازany desert of this kind, or a desert in which there is no waterقَفْرٌ

A place of perdition, or destruction; or the same as فَلَاةٌ, [i. e.] a desert; synonym بَرِّيَّةٌ.

Also a desert in which there is no water for the space of a journey of two nights or more; when there is none for the space of a journey of a night and a day, it is not called this.

Or a tract in which two watering-places are so far apart that camels are kept from drinking two days, with a portion of the day before them and of the day after them, [according to the generally preferred explanation of the term رِبْعٌ used here,] while other animals [that travel faster] drink on alternate days; also فَلَاةٌ.

Or such as lies between the sort in which camels are kept from drinking two days, as above, and the sort in which other animals drink on alternate days; also فَيْفَاةٌ.

So called to foretell good fortune and safety, as meaning a place of safety, from فَازَ, meaning "he became safe"; or from فَوَّزَ or فَازَ, meaning "he perished" or "he died". AHei condemns the first of these statements, but Az and ISd say that it is the more commonly approved, though the second agrees better with analogy. Or it is so called because whoever comes out of it, having crossed it, is safe.

The plural is مَفَاوِزُ.

مَفَازٌ means the same as مَفَازَةٌ.

[and he saw before him, or looked forward to, a far journey and a desert, or a waterless desert]فَٱسْتَقْبَلَ سَفَرًا بَعِيدًا وَمَفَازًا

So in a tradition of Kaab Ibn-Málik.

Qur’ānic occurrences مَفَازَة

Think not that those who exult in what they have brought about, and love to be praised for what they have not done,- think escape the penalty. For them is a penalty Grievous indeed.

39:61
وَيُنَجِّى ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ بِمَفَازَتِهِمْ لَا يَمَسُّهُمُ ٱلسُّوٓءُ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
