maṣdarفَوْتٌmuḍāriʿيَفُوتُ

Core sense — he missed the affair, its time passed; it escaped him; he preceded him; he diedgenerated

1.1[the time, or opportunity, for doing the affair passed, elapsed, or escaped him, without his doing it]فَاتَ وَقْتُ فِعْلِهِ

maṣdar فَوْتٌ and فَوَاتٌ. This is the original meaning of the phrase.

the time of prayer passed without his praying in itفَاتَتِ الصَّلَاةُ

افتات has the same meaning as فَاتَ.

the thing, or affair, passed away from him, neglected by himفَاتَهُ الشَّىْءُ

[Both of these verbs are also transitive.]

الأَمْرُ is also said, with the muḍāriʿ and the maṣdars as above.

the thing escaped him, or became beyond his reach, so that he could not attain or accomplish itافتاتهُ
he, or it, preceded him, got before him, outwent him; and went away from himفَاتَهُ
such a thing preceded me, apparently so as to become beyond my reachفَاتَنِى كَذَا

But this explanation applies only in the case of prayer and the like; in other cases the sense is that of preceding or outgoing.

That is, سَبَقَنِى.

I preceded itفُتُّهُ أَنَا
I ran with him until I passed beyond him, or outwent himجَارَيْتُهُ حَتَّى فُتُّهُ
such a one preceded him, or outwent him, by a cubitفَاتَهُ فُلَانٌ بِذِرَاعٍ
and there shall be for them no escaping from usفَلَا فَوْتَ

In Qur'ān 34:50; explained as فَلَا فَوْتَ لَهُمْ مِنًّا, that is, لَا يَفُوتُونَنَا — they shall not escape us.

[Bd says the like, adding: by flight, or by fortifying themselves.]

An Arab of the desert is related to have said الحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِى لا يُفَاتُ وَلَا [explained in the article on ليت].

it has not escaped you, so bring out what you have to tellلَمْ تُفَاتِى فَهَاتِى

A man went out from his family; when he came back his wife said to him, "If you had been present with us, we would have told you what has happened" — so he said this to her. Literally, you have not been escaped.

The saying is a proverb.

Qur’ān 34:51 approximate — somewhere between 34:49 and 34:54 Lane cites “Kur xxxiv. 50”
Qur’ān 34:51 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ فَزِعُوا۟ فَلَا فَوْتَ وَأُخِذُوا۟ مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ

If thou couldst but see when they will quake with terror; but then there will be no escape (for them), and they will be seized from a position (quite) near.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

Behold! ye were climbing up the high ground, without even casting a side glance at any one, and the Messenger in your rear was calling you back. There did Allah give you one distress after another by way of requital, to teach you not to grieve for (the booty) that had escaped you and for (the ill) that had befallen you. 60:11

And if any of your wives deserts you to the Unbelievers, and ye have an accession (by the coming over of a woman from the other side), then pay to those whose wives have deserted the equivalent of what they had spent (on their dower). And fear Allah, in Whom ye believe.

, aor. يَفُوتُ , inf. n. فَوْتٌ and فَوَاتٌ , originally signifies فَاتَ وَقْتُ فِعْلِهِ [i. e. The time, or opportunity, of the doing, or performing, of the affair passed, passed away, elapsed, or escaped, neglected by him, without his doing it or performing it]; and hence the phrase فَاتَتِ الصَّلَاةُ , meaning The time of prayer passed, passed away, elapsed, or escaped, without his performing it therein (Msb:) and افتات is syn. with فَاتَ . (M, O.) (Msb.) But this explanation is not applicable except in the case of prayer, and the like: in other cases, فَاتَهُ signifies He, or it, preceded him; was, or became, or got, before him; outwent him; passed beyond him; or had, got, or look, precedence of him: and went, or passed, away from him: and the like. Core sense — the two were far apart, they differed, they were dissimilar in excellencegenerated

6.1you see no incongruity, or discordance, in the creation of the Compassionateمَا تَرَى فِى خَلْقِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ مِنْ تَفَاوُتٍ

Its maṣdars are تَفَاوُتٌ, تَفَاوَتٌ, and تَفَاوِتٌ. The second and third are mentioned by AZ; ISk, who mentions both of them, says the second belongs to the dialect of the Kilábees, and El-'Ambaree mentions the third.

Both are irregular, for the maṣdar of a verb of the measure تَفَاعَلَ is تَفَاعُلٌ, [in the copies of the S يتفاعل, and said to be so in J's handwriting,] with damm to the ع, except in this instance; but Sb said that among maṣdars there is no instance of تَفَاعَلٌ or of تَفَاعِلٌ.

The other reading is تَفَوُّتٍ, that of Hamzeh and Ks, in Qur'ān 67:3.

That is, in his creation of the heaven: any fault, defect, or imperfection, such that the beholder might say, "If it were like this, it would be better"; so Es-Suddee explains the second reading, and Fr says that both readings have one meaning.

In it حُرَّ is short for حُرَّةٌ.

The words rendered "has run out like water poured forth" are فَرِغَ.
