Form 1فَهِمَهُ2 senses · 1 main

muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarفَهْمٌ

Core sense — he understood it, he knew it with the mindgenerated

1.1he understood what another said—فَهِمَ عَنْهُ

maṣdar فَهْمٌ and فَهَمٌ, of which the second is the more chaste, while the first is a dialectal variant in wider use — or, as some say, a noun used as a maṣdar. Also فَهَامِيَةٌ, فَهَامَةٌ and فِهَامَةٌ.

He understood it, or knew it with the mind; he grasped its meaning; the same as عَقَلَهُ, عَلِمَهُ and عَرَفَهُ بِالقَلْبِ.

1.1.1he was, or became, one having much understanding—فَهُمَ

That is, he became such as is termed فَهِيم. This is like عَلُمَ, meaning he became such as is termed عَلِيم.

[more] extensively obtaining, or, as some say, it is a subst. used as an inf. n., (Msb,) and فَهَامِيَةٌ (S, K) and فَهَامَةٌ and فِهَامَةٌ , (K,) He understood it, or knew it with the mind; he apprehended its meaning; syn. عَقَلَهُ , (JK,) and عَلِمَهُ (S, Msb, K) and عَرَفَهُ بِالقَلْبِ . فَفَهَّمْنَـٰهَا سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚ وَكُلًّا ءَاتَيْنَا حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ وَسَخَّرْنَا مَعَ دَاوُۥدَ ٱلْجِبَالَ يُسَبِّحْنَ وَٱلطَّيْرَ ۚ وَكُنَّا فَـٰعِلِينَ

To Solomon We inspired the (right) understanding of the matter: to each (of them) We gave Judgment and Knowledge; it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises, with David: it was We Who did (all these things).

Maṣdar: تَفْهِيمٌ. The same as جَعَلْتُهُ يَفْهَمُهُ.

This has the same meaning as التَّفَهُّمُ, which appears to mean the trying to understand, or the affecting to understand.

He understood it, or knew it, ( فَهِمَهُ ,) one thing [or one particular thereof] after another; (S, K;) namely, speech, or language. (S.) [And He endeavoured to understand it. (See its inf. n. as used in the former half of the second paragraph of art. دبر .)] And التَّفَاهُمُ signifies the same as التَّفَهُّمُ [app. as meaning The endeavouring to understand; or the affecting, or pretending, to understand].
