This form is given by Ibn-ʿAbbād.
Ibn-Abi-l-Hadeed: a mountain standing apart from others.
Ibn-ʿAbbād: a portion of a mountain; or a great portion of it, having tallness, and some add, with slenderness.
Or a head, or a round, tall, slender head or peak of a mountain; or a great peak or head of a mountain; or a رُكْن [i.e. a side, or an outward part, or the strongest side or outward part] of a mountain.
Plural أَفْنَادٌ.
as though he were a head, or peak, of a mountain—كَأَنَّهُ فِنْدٌ
Said of a bulky and heavy man; شِمْرَاخ here means a head, or peak.

you will follow me in scattered companies, company after company—تَتَّبِعُونِى أَفْنَادًا أَفْنَادًا يُهْلِكُ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا
A congregated party of men.
Said in a tradition about the Prophet, of what happened when he died; or the meaning is: in companies after companies. They were reckoned at thirty thousand, with sixty thousand angels, two angels to every one of the believers.
The Prophet said this after announcing that he would be among the first to die; [killing one another;] أَفْنَادًا is the plural of فِنْد. A similar phrase in a tradition of ʿÁïsheh is explained in the same way.
Or it means ذَوِى فَنَدٍ, that is, having impotence, and unthankfulness for God's favour.
