He split, and cut, iron. Hence a poet says: [Iron with iron is cloven, and cut.]

With the muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdar فَلْحٌ and فَلَاحَةٌ: he defrauded him in a sale, the maṣdar being synonymous with بَخْسٌ فِى بَيْعٍ; or he bid high for an article of merchandise in order to draw another into buying it at a high price, the maṣdar being synonymous with نَجْشٌ فِى بَيْعٍ.

This is when someone trusts you and says, “Sell me a slave,” or “an article of merchandise,” or “buy it for me,” and you go to the merchants, buy it at a high price, sell by defrauding, and get something from the merchant.

Or, according to the T, فَلْحٌ means a hirer's bidding higher so that another may do the same, and so inciting him.

And فلّح بِهِ He mocked at him, or derided him, and acted with artifice, fraud, or guile, towards him. (L, K. *) And, aor. as above, inf. n. فَلْحٌ and فَلَاحَةٌ , He defrauded him in a sale; syn. of the inf. n. بَخْسٌ فِى بَيْعٍ : (so in the CK:) or he bade high for an article of merchandise in order to inveigh another into purchasing it at a high price: syn. of the inf. n. نَجْشٌ فِى بَيْعٍ . (So in other copies of the K, and in the L and TA.) You say, فَلَحَ بِهِ [He so acted towards him in a sale]: this is when one trusts to thee, and says to thee, “ Sell to me a slave, ” or “ an article of merchandise, ” or “ buy it for me, ” and thou comest to the merchants, and buyest it at a high price, and sellest by defrauding, and obtainest something from the merchant: or, accord. to the T, فَلْحٌ signifies a hirer's exceeding [in an offer] in order that another may do so; thus inciting him. (L.) فَلِحَتْ شَفَتُهُ السُّفْلَى , [aor. فَلَحَ ,] inf. n. فَلَحٌ , His under lip was slit, or cracked. (MA.) See also فَلَحٌ below.

He prospered; he was successful; he attained, or acquired, what he desired or sought, or what was good, or happiness, or what put him in a happy and good state; he became fortunate, happy, or in a happy and good state.

It is commonly known as an intransitive verb; but Talhah Ibn-Musarrif and 'Amr Ibn-'Obeyd read قَدْ أُفْلِحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ [the first verse of chapter 23 of the Qur'ān] with the verb in the passive form. [See also form 10.]

4.1.1

He was, or became, in a state of safety.

4.1.2

He continued in a good, or prosperous, state, and in the enjoyment of ease, comfort, or the blessings of life.

4.1.3he lived by means of the thing—افلح بِالشَّىْءِ

'Abeed says:

أَفْلِحْ بِمَا شِئْتَ فَقَدْ يُبْلَغُ بِٱوَقَدْ يُخَدَّعُ الأَرِيبُ

This means: live by what you will, whether by stupidity or by intelligence; for [one's object is sometimes attained by stupidity, and the intelligent, or sagacious, is sometimes much deluded; or] the stupid is sometimes supplied with the means of subsistence and the intelligent is denied them. Or the meaning is: prosper, and so on.

Say: "Those who invent a lie against Allah will never prosper."

The believers must (eventually) win through,-

87:14
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ

But those will prosper who purify themselves,

(MA.) 10.1

Said by a man to his wife; a form of words used in divorcing in the Time of Ignorance: Prosper in your case, and be independent in it.

When a man says this to his wife and she consents, his saying it once separates her from him so that he cannot take her back; but since it is only an indirect expression, intention is needed to make it binding.

As some relate the tradition, it is with ج [that is, استفلجى: see art. فلج]. [See also form 4, above.]

In the call to prayer. Or: hasten to the attainment of everlasting life; or come to safety, or security; or come to the way of safety and prosperity; or come to the continuance of good.

I will not do that while time lasts—لَا أَفْعَلُ ذٰلِكَ فَلَاحَ الدَّهْرِ

on this sense A poet says:

meaning [But there is not to the present state of existence] lastingness, or endurance.

Thus with kesr in my copies of the S, and in the L and Msb, in agreement with general analogy; or فَلَاحَةٌ with fet-h, though I think fet-h is here a mistake for kesr, because فَلَاحَهٌ departs from general analogy, and because the author of the K regularly omits mention of a word's vowel when it is fet-h.
