Form 5تفكّه7 senses · 1 main

Core sense — he ate fruit; he jested; he wondered at it; he repentedgenerated

5.1

He ate fruit; and he took fruit with his hand, helping himself to it; synonymous with تَنَاوَلَ الفَاكِهَةَ.

Hence, as is said in the A, the saying in the Kur [56:65], فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ, is ironical, meaning [And then you would be in the condition of] making your fruit to be your saying إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ Truly we are burdened with debt (words which occur in the next verse).

Or تَفَكَّهَ here — or rather in a case of this kind — means he threw the fruit away from himself; so says Ibn-ʿAteeyeh in his exposition. [But see the other explanations that follow.]

It also means he abstained from fruit; so it bears two opposite meanings.

5.1.1figurative · مجاز

Sometimes it means he amused himself with talk, as one amuses oneself with eating fruit after a meal; that is, التَّفَكُّهُ is used figuratively as meaning التَّنَقُّلُ بِالحَدِيثِ.

Lane cites “Bd in lvi. 65” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
5.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferred

He affected jesting, or joking.

5.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredthey spoke evil of such a one, or did so in his absence, and defamed himتفكّهوا بِفُلَانٍ

They did this with jesting, one with another.

5.1.4figurative · مجاز — inferredhe enjoyed itتفكّه بِهِ

Particularly, he enjoyed eating it.

5.1.5figurative · مجاز — inferredhe wondered at itتفكّه

Construed with مِنْهُ. And so فَكِهَ, likewise followed by منه.

Hence, according to some, the saying in the Kur cited above, فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ, means [And then you would be in the condition of] wondering at what had befallen you in respect of your seed-produce.

5.1.6

He repented, grieved, lamented, or regretted.

As explained by some, the words of the Kur cited just above mean [And then you would be in the condition of] repenting, and so on.

And so تَفَكَّنُونَ, which is of the dialect of ʿOkl; or, according to Lh, Temeem say تَتَفَكَّنُونَ and Azd-Shanooʾah say تَتَفَكَّهُونَ.

(K.) And sometimes [it means He amused himself with talk; like as one amuses himself with the eating of fruit after a meal; i. e.] التَّفَكُّهُ is metaphorically used as meaning التَّنَقُّلُ بِالحَدِيثِ .
