Core sense — he came to, or reached, him; he went out to open groundgenerated
4.1
See the preceding entry, in two places.
4.1.1
He also went forth, or came, to the فَضَآء [q. v.].
4.1.2figurative · مجازsuch a one came to, or reached, such a one—افضى فُلَانٌ إِلَى فُلَانٍ
Originally, he became in the space, or the place, or quarter, of such a one; or properly, he became in the فَضَآء of such a one.
[the thing, or event, came to, or reached, him]—افضى إِلَيْهِ الأَمْرُ
I came to, or reached, the thing—أَفْضَيْتُ إِلَى الشَّىْءِ
According to IAar, الإِفْضَآءُ properly means الاِنْتِهَآءُ [that is, the coming at last, or ultimately, or the reaching, to a person or thing].
when one of you has come, and gone, to the other—وَقَدْ أَفْضَى بَعْضُكُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ
This is from the Qur'ān 4:25. Here the verb is made transitive by means of إِلَى, because it has the meaning [of اِنْتَهَى or] of وَصَلَ; or the meaning is: when one of you has become alone with the other, in keeping with the original derivation; or, according to some, it alludes to mutual contact, skin to skin, or to sexual intercourse.
he went in to his wife: or he came into contact with his wife, skin to skin—افضى إِلَى ٱمْرَأَتِهِ
Or it means, or also means, he had intercourse with his wife; or he was, or became, alone with her in private, whether he had intercourse with her or not.
Qur’ān 4:21 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur iv. 25”
Qur’ān 4:21 Lane quotes this verse
وَكَيْفَ تَأْخُذُونَهُۥ وَقَدْ أَفْضَىٰ بَعْضُكُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَأَخَذْنَ مِنكُم مِّيثَـٰقًا غَلِيظًاAnd how could ye take it when ye have gone in unto each other, and they have Taken from you a solemn covenant?Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
4.1.3he brought them to a wide, or spacious, place—افضى بِهِمْ
[the road brought him to a rugged tract of land]—افضى بِهِ الطَّرِيقُ إِلَى وَعْرٍ مِنَ الأَرْضِ
Mentioned in the article وعر.
4.1.4he touched the ground with the palm of his hand in his prostration [in prayer]—افضى بِيَدِهِ إلَى الأَرْضِ
I put my hand to it with nothing in between—أَفْضَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِيَدِى مِنْ غَيْرِ حَائِلٍ
The same as مَسَسْتُهُ. Mentioned in the article مس.
4.1.5[I communicated, or made known, to such a one my secret]—أَفْضَيْتُ إِلَى فَلَانٍ بِسِرِى
I acquainted him with the secret—أَفْضَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِالسِّرِّ
4.1.6figurative · مجاز — inferredhe became poor—افضى
So says IAar: as though he came to the ground.
4.2may God not make your mouth wide and empty—لَا يُفْضِى ٱللّٰهُ فَاكَ
Occurs in a tradition, as an expression of prayer.
4.2.1
Hence the saying of IAar, الإِفْضَآءُ أنْ تَسْقُطَ الثَّنَايَا مِنْ تَحْتُ وَمِنْ فَوْقُ, [apparently meaning that اِفْضَآءٌ is the maṣdar of أُفْضِىَ, which means his central incisors, below and above, fell out, or he was caused to lose them]: and hence [the adjective] المُفْضَاةُ [and therefore hence also what follows].
4.2.2he made the woman's two passages become one—افضى المَرْأَةَ
That is, her مَسْلَكَانِ (her vagina and rectum), the part between them being torn, in devirginating her or in having intercourse with her.
أَفَاضَهَا has the same meaning; it is mentioned in the M under the article فضى.
The adjective applied to her is مُفْضَاةٌ, which means the same as شَرِيمٌ.
