Used metonymically, the virginity being likened to a seal; or the phrase comes from فَضَضْتُ اللُّؤْلُؤَةَ, I bored, or perforated, the pearl. [See also 8.]

he destroyed the virginity—فَضّ البَكَارَةَ

God broke, or may God break, his teeth; God scattered, or may God scatter, his teeth—فَضَّ ٱللّٰهُ فَاهُ

Also, according to IKtt, أَفَضَّهُ, which J disallows.

May God not break your teeth—لَا يَفْضُضِ ٱللّٰهُ فَاكَ

This occurs in a tradition. J says one should not say يُفْضِض (though in one copy of the S I find يَفْضِض), yet some allow it.

Some say that إِفْضَاء [evidently a mistake for إِفْضَاض] means the falling out of the teeth from above and below, but the first explanation is the more common.

He broke it; namely, the seal (A, Mgh, Msb, K) of a letter; (A, K;) and any other thing; (TA:) he broke it asunder, or into several pieces; he dissundered it; (S, Mgh, O, K;) for instance, the seal from a letter. (S, O.) فَصَّ الخَاتَمَ is also a metonymical phrase, meaning Inivit: (TA.) It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with them Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (Their faults), and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs (of moment). Then, when thou hast Taken a decision put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).

62:11

وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ تِجَـٰرَةً أَوْ لَهْوًا ٱنفَضُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهَا وَتَرَكُوكَ قَآئِمًا ۚ قُلْ مَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهْوِ وَمِنَ ٱلتِّجَـٰرَةِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ

But when they see some bargain or some amusement, they disperse headlong to it, and leave thee standing. Say: "The (blessing) from the Presence of Allah is better than any amusement or bargain! and Allah is the Best to provide (for all needs)."

63:7

هُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ يَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَآئِنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

They are the ones who say, "Spend nothing on those who are with Allah's Messenger, to the end that they may disperse (and quit Medina)." But to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the Hypocrites understand not.

8.1.2she broke, that is, ended, her period of mourning—افتضّتِ

Said of a woman. Her عِدَّة here means a widow's عدّة, [during which she may not marry again, nor use perfumes and the like,] a period of four months and ten nights, but before the Prophet's time a year.

She did this by touching perfume, or by some other act, such as paring a nail or plucking out hair from her face.

Or she rubbed her body with, or against, a beast — an ass, or a sheep or goat — and so left the state of the عدّة.

Or it was their custom for her to wipe her قُبُل with a bird and throw it away, after which it hardly ever, or never, lived.

She used to enter a حِفْش [or small tent] and wear the worst of her clothing until a year had passed; then a beast or a bird was brought to her, and by means of it she broke her عدّة; then she went out, and a بَعْرَة [or piece of camel's or similar dung] was given to her, and she threw it. [See 1 in art. بعر.]

She did not wash herself, nor touch water, nor pare a nail, nor pluck hair from her face; then, after the year, she would go out with the foulest look and break her عدّة by means of a bird, wiping her قُبُل with it and throwing it away.

The verb, so used, occurs in a tradition, but some relate it with ق and ب [i.e. saying تَقْبِضُ instead of تَفْتَضُّ]; and Az mentions that Esh-Sháfiʿee related this tradition pronouncing the word with ق and ض, from القبض.

[Silver;] a certain thing well known; or wrought silver: see IAar, and the T and K under تِبْرٌ.

Plural فِضَضٌ.

In the Qur'ān [76:16], meaning such flasks as, in spite of their clearness, will be safe from being broken, and can be restored to a sound state if broken, like silver. Zj says they are originally of silver, yet transparent, so that what is inside them is seen from outside, whereas the قوارير of this world are originally from sand. [See also art. قر.]

(TA.) You say also, جَارِيَةٌ فَضْفَاضَةٌ A fleshy, corpulent, tall, girl. (O, K.) And سَحَابَةٌ فَضْفَاضَةٌ A cloud abounding with rain. (TA.) And أَرْضٌ فَضْفَاضٌ Land overspread with water from abundance of rain. (O, TA.)
