[your Lord] He shall decide [between them], and distinguish what is true from what is falseإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ

(M.) And إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ , in the Kur xxxii. 25, means [Verily thy Lord] He shall decide [between them], and distinguish what is true from what is false, [on the day of resurrection,] by distinguishing the speaker of what is true from the speaker of what is false, in respect of that wherein they used to disagree, of what concerned religion. (Bd.) And one says also فَصَلَ الحُكْمَ [He decided the judgment, or judicial sentence]. (M.) فَصَلَ النَّظْمَ , in the K, is a mistake: see 2. (S, O, K.) And فَصَلَ العَسْكَرُ عَنِ البَلَدِ [The army went forth from the town or country]: whence the saying of the Prophet respecting Ibn-Rawáhah, كَانَ أَوَّلَنَا فُصُولًا وَآخِرُنَاقُفُولًا i. e. Nounفَصْلٌ9 senses · 3 main

Core sense — a separation, a partition; a division or section; a decisive sayinggenerated

1

The maṣdar of the transitive verb فَصَلَ.

As a simple noun it has the various meanings that follow; and it is the singular of فُصُولٌ.

1.1

A separation, division, or partition, between two things.

1.2

The place of the مَفْصِل [i. e. the joint, or articulation, and so the point of division, of two bones] of the body.

Between every two such places is a وِصْل [or limb]; in the CK, wrongly, وَصْل.

See also مَفْصِلٌ.

1.3if this is the truth from Youإنْ كَانَ هٰذَا هُوَ ٱلْحَقَّ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ

Among the Basrans, in grammar, this is the term for a disconnective, like عِمَادٌ as used by the Kufans.

In this saying, in the Qur'ān 8:32, هو is called فصل and also عماد, the first being the commoner term; and الحقّ is in the accusative case as being the khabar of كان.

1.4the four divisions of the year: autumn, winter, spring, and summerفُصُولُ السَّنَةِ

It is also the singular of فُصُول, in this phrase.

Explained in art. زمن; see زَمَنٌ.

1.5

A division, or section, of a باب [or chapter], so called as being divided from the others, or as forming a division between itself and them, so that it has the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ or of the measure فَاعِلٌ.

1.6

The opposite of أَصْلٌ [as denoting relationship]: there are أُصُول of relationship and فُصُول of it, the first meaning the stocks and the second the branches.

See also the other explanations of فَصْلٌ as opposed to أصْلٌ, under the latter of these two words.

distinct, clear, or plain, distinguishing between what is true and what is false; neither too little nor too muchفَصَلٌ لَانَزْرٌ وَلَا هَذَرٌ

It is also used as an adjective; so in the Qur'ān 86:15.

There the word relates to the Qur'ān itself. The final character is unclear in the original text.

Said of the speech of the Prophet; also given as هَذْرٌ, to make it match نَزْرٌ in form.

3

A general طَاعُون [i. e. plague or pestilence].

Core sense — a joint, a place where two bones of the body meetgenerated

1

Any place where two bones of the body, or of the limbs or members, meet [or join, this being a place of separation]; also فَصْلٌ: a single one of the مَفَاصِل of the limbs or members.

A joint such as the elbow, the knee, or the knuckle; and sometimes a joint meaning a bone having an articulation at each end, or at one end, together with the flesh that is upon it.

In a tradition in which it is said that the fine for any مَفْصِل of a human being is a third of the fine for the whole finger, it means the مَفْصِل of any of the fingers or toes; that is, the portion between any أَنْمَلَتَانِ.

Here that means two knuckles; but this is a loose and incomplete explanation, for the portion in which the nail is should be added, since the word is applied to any of the phalanges with the flesh upon it. Under نمل, one of the explanations of الأَنْمَلَةُ is “the مَفْصِل in which is the nail”.

المَفَاصِل, which is the plural of مَفْصِلٌ, means the place of separation of the mountain from the tract of sand, these two having between them crushed and small pebbles, so that the water there is clear and glistens, or is shallow. The poet means to describe the clearness of the water, because it descends from the mountain and passes over no dust or earth.

Or it means hard stones compactly set, or heaped up; in one text مُتَرَاصِفَة, in another مُتَرَاكِمَة.

It is also said to mean what lies between two mountains, consisting of sand and crushed pebbles, whose water is clear; or, according to AO, the water-courses of a valley; or, according to Abu-l-ʿOmeythil, the clefts in mountains from which water flows, said only of what lies between two mountains.

The مَفْصِل is also said to be any place in a mountain on which the sun does not rise.

It is said too that مَآءُ المَفَاصِلِ means what flows from between the two joints when one of them is cut from the other, like clear water; the singular is مَفْصِلٌ.

AA says that the مفاصل in the verse are the مفاصل of the bones, and that the poet likens that water to the مآء of the flesh; IAar says the same.
