muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarفَشَلٌ فَشْلٌ

Core sense — he was, or became, cowardly, weak-hearted; she hung a cloth in the camel-vehiclegenerated

1.1he was, or became, cowardly, weak-hearted, flagging, remiss, and timorousفَشَلَ

Muḍāriʿ فَشَلَ. Examples of the verb occur in the Qur'ān 3:118 and 8:48.

. A dialectal variant, agreeing with one reading of the second of those two verses.

he was, or became, cowardly, weak-hearted, flagging, remiss, and timorousفَشَلَ

. A dialectal variant, agreeing with El-Hasan El-Basree's reading of the same verse.

Qur’ān 3:122 approximate — somewhere between 3:112 and 3:145 Lane cites “Kur iii. 118”
Qur’ān 3:122 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
إِذْ هَمَّت طَّآئِفَتَانِ مِنكُمْ أَن تَفْشَلَا وَٱللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا ۗ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Remember two of your parties Meditated cowardice; but Allah was their protector, and in Allah should the faithful (Ever) put their trust.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.2she hung a piece of cloth in the camel-vehicleفَشَلَتْ
she hung a piece of cloth in the camel-vehicleفَشَلَتْ مِفْشَلَهَا

Or فَشَلَتْ فِشْلَهَا (in the CK فَشَّلَتْهُ, the pronoun relating to الفِشْل); maṣdar فَشْلٌ and اِفْتَشَلَتْهُ, that is, مِفْشَلَهَا or فِشْلَهَا, so according to the M as well as the O. In the K there is اِفْتَشَلَتْ alone, without any complement, as though it were intransitive; or افشلت, which the TA says is the reading in the copies of the K, though I have not found it in any.

she hung a piece of cloth in the camel-vehicleتفشّلت

Mentioned without any complement, as though intransitive.

Said of a woman, in relation to the فِشْل, which is also called مِفْشَل: she hung a ثَوْب [or piece of cloth] (thus in the O; in the TA her ثوب) upon the camel-vehicle called هَوْدَج, then put it, or drew its main part, within it, and bound its ends to the قَوَاعِد [or four pieces of wood that form a square frame upon which it is fixed (see its singular قَاعِدَةٌ)]. This was beneath her, so as to protect her from the heads of the curved pieces of wood called أَحْنَآء [plural of حِنْوٌ], and the apparatus called أَقْتَاب [plural of قِتْبٌ], and the knots of the cord called عُصْم [plural of عِصَامٌ]. So says ISh.

Nounفَشْلٌ2 senses

Core sense — weak, or weak-hearted; cowardly; flagging, remiss, or languidgenerated

1weak, or weak-hearted; cowardly; flagging, remiss, or languidفَشِلٌ

According to the K, this has the same meaning as the headword.

One says رَجُلٌ خَشْلٌ فَشْلٌ and خَشِلٌ فَشِلٌ; but SM says that this is a mistake, wrongly taken from a passage of the M, where it is stated that one says رَجُلٌ خَشْلٌ فَشْلٌ and خَسْل فَسْلٌ, that is, with ش in both and with س in both, not that it is with fet-h in both and like كَتِفٌ. [I find, however, خَشِلٌ فَشِلٌ mentioned in art. خشل in the K, and also, as from Ibn-'Abbád, in the same article in the O; and as فَشِلٌ agrees with a general rule as ism fāʿil of فَشِلَ, I think it probably correct.]

The plural is أَفْشَالٌ, or فُشْلٌ, or both.

In the following verse, occurring in a tradition about the prayer for rain, spoken to the Prophet by an Arab of the desert:

shāhid
وَلَا شَىْءَ مِمَّا يَأْكُلُ النَّاسُ عِنْدَنَاسِوَى الحَنْظَلِ العَامِىِّ وَالعِلْهِزِ الفَشْلِ

— by العِلْهِزِ الفَشْلِ is meant العِلْهِزِ الفَشْلِ آكِلُهُ وَمُدَّخِرُهُ, that is, الضَّعِيفِ, the phrase being like الشَّجَرَةَ المَلْعُونَةَ in the Qur'ān 17:62, that is, آكِلُوهَا. [So the verse means: And there is nothing, of what men eat, in our possession, save the colocynth that is a year old, and so dry, or that has been laid up for the year of drought or barrenness, and the food made of blood and the fur of camels — the one who eats it, and the one who stores it, being weak.] But it is also related with س [that is, الفَسْلِ], and then it needs no paraphrase.

Some say that its ل is augmentative, like the ل in عَبْدَلٌ and in the proper name زَيْدَلٌ; but it may be from some word other than فَيْشَةٌ, though that has nearly the same meaning [or, as is said in the TA in art. فيش, both have the same meaning]; and if so, the ى may be augmentative, which agrees better with analogy.

The plural is فَيَاشِلُ; and فَيْشَلٌ is another plural of it, or rather an ism jamʿ, used as such in a verse of Jereer.
