He discovered, revealed, or disclosed a thing that was concealed or obscured, or a meaning grasped by the intellect; he made a thing plain or clear; he explained, expounded, or interpreted it.
Muḍāriʿ فَسِرَ and فَسُرَ. Also فسّر, maṣdar تَفْسِيرٌ, which is the more common; or the latter has an intensive meaning.
Accord. to Th and IAar, تَفْسِيرٌ and تَأْوِيلٌ mean the same, and so do these and مَعْنًى.
Or تفسير means disclosing what is meant by a doubtful expression, while تأويل means reducing one of the two senses that an expression admits to the one that suits the apparent meaning; or the latter means turning a verse of the Qur-án from its apparent meaning to a meaning that it admits, when that meaning agrees with the Qur-án and the Sunneh.
For instance, in the phrase in the Qur 6:95 and elsewhere, يُخْرِجُ ٱلْحَىَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَيِّتِ: if the meaning is [thus explained] "He produces the bird from the egg", this is تفسير; and if the meaning is [thus explained] "He produces the believer from the unbeliever", or "the knowing from the ignorant", this is تأويل.
Or تفسير means expounding, explaining, or interpreting the narratives that occur in the Qur-án collected without distinction, making known the meanings of the strange words or expressions, and explaining the occasions on which the verses were revealed; and تأويل means explaining the meaning of what is مُتَشَابِه [or equivocal, or ambiguous], that is, what is not understood without repeated consideration.
