Core sense — he slit it, or cut it lengthwise; he cut and shaped it well; he was confoundedgenerated
1.1he slit it, or cut it lengthwise, badly or well—فرّاهُ
he slit it, or cut it lengthwise, either badly or well.
he slit it, or cut it lengthwise, badly or well—افراهُ
he slit it, or cut it lengthwise, and made it bad—فرّاهُ
he slit it, or cut it lengthwise, and made it good—افرى
he made it good; or he ordered another to make it so—افراهُ
he measured it, and cut it, to make it good—فَرَاهُ
According to the sound lexicologists, it is this form that carries the sense of slitting badly.
Some say that this signifies rather that he slit it and made it bad. As though he removed unsoundness from it.
this, according to J.
he cut a thing in order to make it good; or he cut a skin well—فَرَى
he cut it in a bad manner—افرى
he rent, tore, or slit the skin, made holes in it, and spoiled it—افرى الجِلْدَ
he slit a thing of any kind—افرى
Or it signifies he slit much, in a bad manner.
According to As.
فرّاهُ is used in the same way.
he slit the external jugular veins, so that the blood in them came out—افرى الأَودَاجَ
The اوداج are the external jugular veins. One says the same of a garment or piece of cloth, and of a جُلَّة [a receptacle for dates made of palm-leaves woven together]; or the meaning is he cut the اوداج.
IAar alone mentions فَرَى أَوْدَاجَهُ and افراها. [It is also said that فَرَى means he cut a نِطَع or the like; see the article خلق, where an example occurs in a verse.]
he measured, worked, and made a thing well—فَرَى
Said of a thing such as a sandal, or a نِطَع, or a water-skin and the like; or he measured it and cut it to make it good.
And he measured and manufactured a مَزَادَة [leathern water-bag]; or he sewed a مزادة and made it well.
The difference between الإِفْرَٱءُ and الفَرْىُ is said to be that the first is cutting so as to spoil, and slitting such as the slaughterer and the wild beast make, while the second is cutting so as to make good, like the cutting done by one who sews hides or leather.
I split, or clove, his head with a sword—
But فَرَى sometimes occurs in the sense of افرى.
Like أَفْرَرْتُهُ; so Yz and others in the article فر.
he slit the wound—افرى الجُرْحَ
the wolf slit, or rent, the belly of the sheep, or goat—افرى الذِّئْبُ بَطْنَ الشَّاةِ
you have done badly, and have not done well—قَدْ أَفْرَيْتَ وَمَا فَرَيْتَ
1.1.1figurative · مجازhe slaughtered him, he butchered him—فَرَاهُ
Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above. Used metonymically, denoting violence or excess in slaying.
1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe blamed, or censured, a man—افرى
It also means: he cut him with censure, or satire.
I traversed, or crossed, the land, or country—فَرَيْتُ الأَرْضَ
Literally, I travelled and cut it; maṣdar as above.
1.1.4figurative · مجاز — inferredhe does what is wonderful in his deed—الفَرِىَّ هُوَ يَفْرِى
no one does his deed, or the like—مَا يَفْرِى فَرِيَّهُ أَحَدٌ
With teshdeed on the ى in فريه, as related by A'Obeyd, and said of a courageous man; but Kh says it is correctly فَرْيَهُ, a maṣdar, without teshdeed.
I left him doing well, or excellently, in a deed, or in watering—
and I have not seen a chief of a people do his deed, and so on—فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا يَفْرِى فَرِيَّهُ
Said by the Prophet about 'Omar, whom he saw in a dream drawing water at a well with a great bucket.
Or, as some relate it, he said فَرْيَهُ.
A'Obeyd says this is like saying يَعْمَلُ عَمَلَهُ and يَقُولُ قَوْلَهُ; and Fr cited to us, as an example: [Truly you multiplied and magnified your words about it]
.
The hemistich is explained in the same way in the S, and its measure shows that الفَرِيَّا cannot here be a mistake for الفَرْيَا.
It is said that فَرِىّ so used is of the measure فَعيلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ, from فَرَى, meaning he cut, or cut lengthwise, a hide or leather.
I left him slitting the thing to be slit, and shaping it—تَرَكْتُهُ يَفْرِى الفَرِىَّ وَيَقُدُّ
Said of a man who is strenuous, or vigorous, in an affair, and strong.
1.1.5
فَرَى is also synonymous with افترى; see the latter, in two places.
1.1.6the lightning shone, or flickered, and continued, in the sky—
Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above.
1.2he was, or became, confounded, or perplexed, and unable to see his right course—
. Synonymous with بَهِتَ, دَهِشَ, تَحَيَّرَ and بَطِرَ.
he looked, and did not know what he should do—فَرِىَ
El-Aalam El-Hudhalee says: [And I became confounded by fright, so that I did not shoot an arrow, nor say farewell to a friend]
.
So according to As.
I wondered—
From الفَرِىُّ, meaning that which is wonderful.

O Prophet! When believing women come to thee to take the oath of fealty to thee, that they will not associate in worship any other thing whatever with Allah, that they will not steal, that they will not commit adultery (or fornication), that they will not kill their children, that they will not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood, and that they will not disobey thee in any just matter,- then do thou receive their fealty, and pray to Allah for the forgiveness (of their sins): for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(A, TA.) فَرَاهُ , aor. as above, [and so the inf. n.,] is sometimes metonymically used [as meaning He slaughtered him, or butchered him; i. e.] as denoting vehemence, or excess, in slaying. (TA.) (M. [See, however, what follows.]) They say, تَرَكْتُهُ يَفْرِى الفَرِىَّ , meaning [I left him] doing well, or excellently, in a deed, or in watering: [an explanation relating to what here follows:] the Prophet said, respecting 'Omar, whom he saw in a dream drawing water at a well with a great bucket, فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا يَفْرِى فَرِيَّهُ [And I have not seen a chief of a people do his deed, &c.]: (T:) or, as some relate it, he said فَرْيَهُ : (TA:) [but] A'Obeyd says, this is like thy saying يَعْمَلُ عَمَلَهُ and يَقُولُ قَوْلَهُ ; and Fr cited to us [as an ex.] 1 meaning [Verily] thou didst multiply and magnify thy words respecting it: (T: and in like manner this hemistich [which shows, by the measure, that الفَرِيَّا cannot be here a mistake for الفَرْيَا ,] is expl. in the S:) it is said that فَرِىّ thus used is of the measure فَعيلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ , from فَرَى signifying “ he cut ” [or “ cut lengthwise ” or “ slit ”] a hide, or leather; (Har p. 257; [where see more;]) [and this assertion is corroborated by the fact that] one says of a man strenuous, or vigorous, in an affair, and strong, تَرَكْتُهُ يَفْرِى الفَرِىَّ وَيَقُدُّ [lit. I left him slitting, or cutting, the slit, or cut, thing, and shaping]. (T.) قَدْ كُنْتِ تَفْرِينَ بِهِ الفَرِيَّا فَرَى is also synonymous with افترى : see the latter, in two places. فَرَى البَرْقُ , aor. and inf. n. as above, signifies The lightning shone, or glistened, or shone with flickering light, and continued, in the sky. (T, TA.) فَرِىَ , (T, S, M, K,) aor. يَفْرَى , (T, S,) inf. n. فَرًى , (T, S, K, but omitted in the CK,) He was, or became, confounded, or perplexed, and unable to see his right course; syn. بَهِتَ , (T,) and دَهِشَ , (T, S, M, K,) and تَحَيَّرَ , (S, K,) and بَطِرَ : (Skr, on the verse here following:) El-Aalam El-Hudhalee says, 1 [And I became confounded, &c., by reason of fright, so that I did not shoot an arrow, nor bade I farewell to a friend]: (T, M:) or, accord. to As, فَرِىَ , aor. يَفْرَى , signifies he looked, and knew not what he should do: (T:) and فَرِيتُ signifies also I wondered; from الفَرِىُّ meaning “ that which is wonderful. ” (Skr, on the verse above-cited.)
