Form 1فَرَقَ بَيْنَ الشَّيْئَيْنِ12 senses · 9 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarفَرْغٌ فَرْقٌ فُرُوقٌ إِفْرَاقٌ

Core sense — he made a separation, or distinction, between two things; he fearedgenerated

1.1[therefore decide, or make a distinction, between us and the unrighteous people]فَٱفْرُقْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ الفَاسِقِينَ

and in one dialect فَرِقَ; maṣdar فَرْغٌ and فُرْقَانٌ, the latter more intensive in meaning. He made a separation, or a distinction, or difference, between the two things, or between the parts of the two things; applying alike to things seen and to things perceived by the mind.

IAar, by the examples he gives, makes it relate particularly to objects of the mind, such as sayings, and فرّق to persons or material things; the same distinction is mentioned by Az. Others, however, say that the two verbs mean the same, but that the latter is more intensive.

In the Kur 5:28; according to one reading, فَٱفْرِقْ.

[In it] is made distinct [every firm decree]فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ

In the Kur 44:3; or, as Katádeh explains it, is decided.

we have made it distinct, and freed it from defect, and explained the ordinances in itفَرَقْنَاهُ

In the phrase وَقُرآنًا فَرَقْنَاهُ in the Kur 17:107. Some read فَرَّقْنَاهُ, meaning we have sent it down in separate portions, over a number of days.

and when we clave the sea because of youوَإِذْ فَرَقْنَا بِكُمُ ٱلْبَحْرَ

In the Kur 2:47; the same as فَلَقْنَاهُ. IJ mentions another reading, فَرَّقْنَا, meaning we divided it into several portions, but this is unusual.

It is also said that الفَرْقُ is for rectification, and التَّفْرِيقُ for vitiation.

those who have divided their religion into several parts, and dismembered it, and have disagreed about it among themselvesإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِيْنَهُمْ

So IJ, on the Kur 6:160; the like occurs in 30:31.

Some read فَرَقُوا دِيْنَهُمْ without teshdeed, meaning they have severed their religion from the other religions [app. by taking it in part, or parts, from them]; or, IJ says, this may mean the same as the former reading, since فَعَلَ sometimes has the same meaning as فَعَّلَ.

he made the thing distinct, or plain, to himفَرَقَ لَهُ عَنِ الشَّىْءِ

So says IJ.

1.1.1he separated his hair with the combفَرَقَ الشَّعْرَ بِالمُشْطِ

Muḍāriʿ فَرُقَ and فَرِقَ.

he separated the hair of his head with the combفَرَّقَ رَأْسَهُ بِالمُشْطِ

Maṣdar تَفْرِيقٌ.

[It is implied in a tradition cited in the O and TA that فَرَقَهُ means the same as this.]

1.2the road presented itself to him divided into two roadsفَرَقَ لَهُ الطَّرِيقُ

. Or it means: an affair presented itself, or occurred, to him, and he knew its mode, or manner; thus in the TA, as from the K, but it is not in the CK nor in Lane's manuscript copy of the K.

an idea, or an opinion, occurred to meفَرَقَ لِى رَأْىٌ
this affair became distinct, apparent, or manifest, to meفَرَقَ لِى هٰذَا الأَمْرُ

In a tradition of I'Ab.

.

[and if an idea, or an opinion, does not occur to the Imám]فَإِنْ لَمْ يُفْرُقْ لِلْإِمَامِ رَأْىٌ
1.2.1she, being taken with the pains of parturition, went away at random in the landفَرَقَتْ

Said of a she-camel, and of a she-ass..

1.3he voided dungفَرَقَ

the same as ذَرَقَ, which is said of a bird, and sometimes of a man.

[See also أَفْرَقَ.]

1.4

And he possessed a فِرْق [q. v.] of sheep or goats. According to the K, of date-stones with which to feed camels; but the first explanation is the right one.

1.5he fed her (i.e. a woman) with فَرِيقَة [q. v.]فَرَقَهَا

also افرقها.

1.6[he vied with me in fear and] I exceeded him in fearفَارَقَنِى فَفَرَقْتُهُ

.

1.6.1

See also form 2, last sentence.

1.7he feared; he was, or became, afraid, or frightenedفَرِقَ

maṣdar فَرَقٌ.

[I feared you, or was in fear of you]فَرِقْتُ مِنْكَ

But you should not say فَرِقْتُكَ. Sb, however, mentions فَرِقَهُ, with مِنْ suppressed.

[he feared for him]فَرِقَ عَلَيْهِ
1.8he entered into a wave and dived in itفَرِقَ

. [The wave is termed فِرْقٌ.]

1.9he drank the measure called فَرَق, or drank with the فَرَقفَرَقَ

According to the K it is the same verb as above, but according to Sgh in the O the context suggests this form.

In a tradition of 'Omar: [and make the one head two head,] by buying two animals with the price of one, so that when one dies the second remains.

In the Kur 2:96: whereby they might dissolve, break up, derange, or unsettle the state of union subsisting between the man and his wife, in respect of affairs and of the expression of opinion. El-Isbahánee: it is from التَفْرِيقُ as meaning تَشْتِيتُ الشَّمْلِ وَالكَلِمَةِ.

They followed what the evil ones gave out (falsely) against the power of Solomon: the blasphemers Were, not Solomon, but the evil ones, teaching men Magic, and such things as came down at babylon to the angels Harut and Marut. But neither of these taught anyone (Such things) without saying: "We are only for trial; so do not blaspheme." They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's permission. And they learned what harmed them, not what profited them. And they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the Hereafter. And vile was the price for which they did sell their souls, if they but knew!Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
