Nounفَرْعٌ9 senses · 4 main

Core sense — the uppermost part of anything; a branch; a derivative; the noble of a peoplegenerated

1the upper, or uppermost, part of the earفَرْعُ الأُذُنِ

The upper, or uppermost, part of anything: the فَرْع is what branches forth from the lower, or lowest, part. The plural is فُرُوعٌ only.

It is said in a tradition أَىُّ الشَّجَرِ أَبْعَدُ مِنَ الخَارِفِ قَالُوا فَرْعُهَا قَالَ وَكَذٰلِكَ الصَّفُّ الأَوَّلُ [What part of trees is furthest from the plucker of the fruit? They said, The uppermost part of them; he said, And such like is the first row of the persons worshipping in the mosque].

Plural as above.

the upper, or uppermost, parts of the two eyeballsفُرُوعُ المُقْلَتَيْنِ
1.1

[Hence.] A branch of a tree or plant; or the head of a branch; or a great branch; and a branch of anything.

1.2figurative · مجاز — inferred

[And hence, a branch, or subdivision, or derivative, of anything regarded as a fundamental or a whole;] a thing that is built, or founded, upon another thing; the opposite of أَصْلٌ.

The plural فُرُوعٌ, as opposed to أُصُولٌ meaning “fundamentals,” means, in the conventional language of the lawyers and of men of science generally, the derivative institutes of the law, etc.: see form 2.

عِلْمُ الفُرُوعِ [the science of the derivative institutes of the law] is what is commonly known by the name عِلْمُ الفِقْهِ [the science of jurisprudence; because it is mainly concerned with institutes derived from fundamentals]. Hājjee Khaleefeh.

1.3figurative · مجاز[meaning A long-haired woman]اِمْرَأَةٌ طَوِيلَةُ الفُرُوعِ

And the hair of a woman: plural as above [apparently used in a collective sense, like the French “cheveux”].

And full, or abundant, hair.

1.4figurative · مجازHe is the noble, or man of eminence, of his people or partyهُوَ فَرْعُ قَوْمِهِ
he is one of their noblesمِنْ فُرُوعِهِم

on this sense And the noble, or man of eminence, of a people or party: plural as above.

1.5figurative · مجاز — inferred

And [apparently from the same word as meaning “a branch of a tree”] a valley branching off.

And a channel in which water runs to the شِعْب, i.e. the وَادِى [here meaning the water-course in a low tract or between the two acclivities of two mountains]: in this sense its plural is فِرَاعٌ.

2

Also [or قَوْسٌ فَرْعٌ] a bow that is made from the extreme portion of a branch, from the head of it.

A bow that is not [made from a branch] divided lengthwise is called قَوْسٌ فَرْعٌ, one that is [made from a branch] divided lengthwise being called قَوْسٌ فِلْقٌ; or the فَرْع is one of the best of bows.

The word is also used as an adjective: one says قَوْسٌ فَرْعٌ and فَرْعَةٌ.

3

Also, i.e. فَرْعٌ, property that is beneficial, or serviceable, and made ready, or prepared.

Or, according to the S, it is فَرَعٌ that has this meaning; but Sgh, and after him the author of the K, say that this is a mistake, and a verse in which it occurs with the ر sākin is cited in the O and K as an example of it in this sense.

It may be, however, that the poet has made the ر sākin of necessity [by poetic licence, for the sake of the metre]; or it may here properly mean “a branch,” and be used metonymically as meaning recent property.

Core sense — the firstling of a camel, or of a sheep or goat, sacrificed to the gods; licegenerated

1The first of what is taken by the chase or the like is a firstlingأَوَّلُ الصَّيْدِ فَرَعٌ

The firstling of the camel, or of the sheep or goat, which they used to sacrifice to their gods, looking for a blessing by it; and فَرَعَةٌ means the same.

Hence it is said in a tradition, [implying the prohibition of this custom,] لَا فَرَعَ وَلَا عَتِيرَةٌ, or لَا فَرَعَةَ وَلَا عَتِيرَةَ [see عَتِيرَةٌ].

Or, when the camels amounted to the number their owner wished for, they sacrificed a firstling; or when a man's camels amounted to a full hundred, he sacrificed a he-camel of them every year and gave it to the people to eat, neither he nor his family tasting it; or rather, it is said, he sacrificed a young, or youthful, he-camel to his idol.

The Muslims used to do it in the first part of El-Islám; then it was abrogated.

According to the Bāri' and the Mj, the firstling of camels and also that of sheep or goats are called thus. The plural of فَرَعٌ is فُرُعٌ, with two ḍammehs.

That is, a فرع, as being likened to a firstling: so says Yezeed Ibn-Murrah.

1.1

The poet Ows Ibn-Hajar, or Bishr Ibn-Abee-Kházim, has used it as meaning the skin of a فَرَع, suppressing the prefix جِلْد.

For they used to clothe another young camel with its skin, so that the mother of the one sacrificed might incline to it [and yield her milk].

2

Also, and فَرْعٌ: lice; or, as some say, small lice. A single one is called فَرَعَةٌ and فَرْعَةٌ; or, according to some, فرعة means a large louse.

3

And the former: food that is prepared [apparently for persons invited to partake of it] on the occasion of camels' bringing forth, just as خُرْسٌ is such food on the occasion of a woman's bringing forth.

3.1

And a portion, or share; the same as قِسْمٌ; according to some, peculiarly of water.

Aboo-Khirásh says: [And a day continued for them, its heat as though it were the blazing of fire, from the asterism of the فُرُوعِ, a long day]

shāhid
وَظَلَّ لَهَا يَوْمٌ كَأَنَّ أُوَارَهُذَكَا النَّارِ مِنْ نَجْمِ الفُرُوعِ طَوِيلُ

In the S the reading is وَظَلَّ لَنَا, but correctly لَهَا, meaning to the she-asses. Aboo-Sa'eed related it as above, with the unpointed ع in الفروع.

In the same way he explains it as used in the phrase فَيْحُ نَجْمِ الفُرُوعِ [which I would render the violent raging of the heat of the asterism of the فروع] in a verse of Umeiyeh Ibn-Abee-'Áïdh.

El-Jumahee related it differently, with غ; but the فُرُوغ [or rather the فَرْغَانِ] are among the stars of Aquarius, and their season is cold, so that there is then no فيح.
