Core sense — he made him precede; he left, or neglected, it; he was remiss in itgenerated

2.1

He, or it, made him precede, or be first or foremost; made him get priority or precedence..

افرطهُ has the same meaning.

2.1.1he sent to him a messenger from among his particular friends

He emboldened him in contention, or dispute; افرطهُ also has this meaning.

he sent his messenger forward to him, and hastened himفَرَطَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولَهُ

Maṣdar as above. Or: he sent him forward, in advance, to him; or he made him his deputy in a litigation.

he neglected it; he failed of doing what he ought, or was remiss in itفرّط فِيهِ

He also preferred backwardness in it; فرّطهُ is used in the same way, though according to the TA only the former phrase means he failed of doing what he ought.

he neglected it, or was remiss in it, so that it escaped himفَرَطَ فيه

Muḍāriʿ

he flagged, or was remiss; he was lazy, or indolentفرّط

he neglected the things of God and did not do themفرّط فِى جَنْبِ ٱللّٰهِ

Its second person singular is used in cautioning a man against something in front of him, or in telling him to go forward; and it is intransitive.

Sakhr-el-Gheí says: [That is my weapon, and I will not send it on before, staying behind it: I fear lest they perform what they have threatened.]

This expression is seldom used except in poetry.

Sgh expressed in the TS his fear that the former may be a miscopying of the latter, but seems afterwards to have conceded that the former is correct, since he mentions it in the O.

6:31

Lost indeed are they who treat it as a falsehood that they must meet Allah,- until on a sudden the hour is on them, and they say: "Ah! woe unto us that we took no thought of it"; for they bear their burdens on their backs, and evil indeed are the burdens that they bear?

6:38

There is not an animal (that lives) on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you. Nothing have we omitted from the Book, and they (all) shall be gathered to their Lord in the end.

6:61

He is the irresistible, (watching) from above over His worshippers, and He sets guardians over you. At length, when death approaches one of you, Our angels take his soul, and they never fail in their duty.

12:80

Now when they saw no hope of his (yielding), they held a conference in private. The leader among them said: "Know ye not that your father did take an oath from you in Allah's name, and how, before this, ye did fail in your duty with Joseph? Therefore will I not leave this land until my father permits me, or Allah commands me; and He is the best to command.

39:56

"Lest the soul should (then) say: 'Ah! Woe is me!- In that I neglected (my duty) towards Allah, and was but among those who mocked!'-

It also denotes one's meeting a man, or coming to him, after some days. According to A ʿObeyd, not more than fifteen days, or fifteen nights, and not less than three.

But the restriction just mentioned does not apply when the word is prefixed to a noun signifying a period of time.

It is said in the TA that, according to ISk, it is used in the saying آتِيكَ فَرْطَ يَوْمٍ أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ, and that this is a day between two days; but this seems to be a mistake for between a day and two days. The TA later says that فَرْطَ يَوْمٍ أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ means after two days, though the full explanation should be after a day or two days.
