1.1I spread a bed for himفَرَشتُ لَهُ فِرَاشًا

I spread for such a oneفَرَشْتُ فُلَانًا
he spread a carpet for such a one at his entertainmentفَرَشَ فُلَانًا بِسَاطًا

Maṣdar فَرْشٌ and أَفْرَشَهُ بساطا.

he spread a carpet for such a one at his entertainmentفَرَّشَهُ بساطا

Maṣdar تَفْرِيشٌ.

Maṣdar تَفْرِيشٌ.

[he spread the garment, or piece of cloth, for himself]افترشهُ

he spread his fore legs upon the groundافترش ذِرَاعَيْهِ
he spread his fore legs upon the groundيَدَيْهِ

Said of a lion, a wolf, a dog, or a beast of prey.

Said of a man: he spread his fore arms upon the ground in the same way, not raising them from the ground; doing this while prostrating oneself in prayer is forbidden. Or: he laid his fore arms upon the ground like a bed for himself.

فَرْشٌ [as a maṣdar whose verb is فُرِشَت, as is shown by an explanation of إَقْعَادٌ and by the phrase مَفْرُوشَةُ الرِّجْلِ], in the hind leg of a camel [and of a horse, as is shown by the explanation of اقعاد mentioned above], means the being a little expanded, which is approved. When the width between the shanks is excessive, so that the hock-joints knock together — a state called عَقَلٌ [maṣdar of عَقِلَ] — it is disapproved. Or, as some say, it means its not being erect nor much expanded.

synonym بَثَّ.

1.1.1figurative · مجازhe made his case ample and free from difficulty for him, and laid it fully open to himفَرَشَهُ أَمْرَهُ

Synonym أَوْسَعَهُ إِيَّاهُ and بَسَطَهُ لَهُ كُلَّهُ.

he made his case ample and free from difficulty for him, and laid it fully open to himأَمْرًا

In like manner the saying of 'Alee, فَرَشْتُكُمُ المَعْرُوفَ, is explained by Ibn-Abi-l-Hadeed as meaning أَوْسَعْتُكُمْ إِيَّاهُ [I largely conferred favour, or kindness, upon you]; but MF thinks this strange.

I laid my state, or case, open to himفَرَشْتُهُ أَمْرِى

Synonym بَسَطْتُهُ لَهُ.

I laid my state, or case, open to himأَفْرَشْتُهُ أَمْرِى

See an example under بَاطِنٌ.

on this sense Probably, in MF's opinion, 'Alee's saying given above should be rendered in agreement with this explanation.

1.1.2figurative · مجاز[such a one lays himself out for the service of men]فُلَانٌ يَفْرُشُ نَفْسَهُ لِلنَّاسِ
[or perhaps: he makes himself like a victim for them]يَفْتَرِشُ نَفْسَهُ لَهُمْ

See مُتَفَرِّشٌ below. One says فَرَشَهُ لِلذَّبْحِ, or أَفْرَشَهُ (this latter form is given by Freytag in his Lexicon, but without any indication of the authority), meaning he threw it down (namely a beast) for slaughter; see فَرْشٌ below.

Or: he overcame him (another man), prostrated him, and got upon him.

Nounفَرْشٌ8 senses · 1 main

Core sense — what is spread, of household furniture; a wide plain; young camelsgenerated

1

A maṣdar of 1; see it throughout.

1.2figurative · مجاز

Seed-produce when it spreads itself over the ground.

In some of the copies, instead of إِذَا فَرَّشَ, which is the right reading, we find اذا فُرِشَ.

According to some, the word means seed-produce when it has become three-leaved or four-leaved.

1.3figurative · مجاز — inferred

1.4figurative · مجاز[from the highest sphere, or the empyrean, to] the earthمِنَ العَرْشِ إِلَى الفَرْشِ

Apparently from this comes the saying. See the article عرش.

A collection of trees of the kind called عِضَاه; and a round plot of trees of the kind called طَلْح.

1.6figurative · مجاز

Shrubs, or small trees; and small fire-wood.

1.7figurative · مجاز

Young camels, or the young of camels; this is its meaning in the Qur'ān 6:143.

فَرِيشٌ is said to have this meaning as well, but according to Aboo-Bekr wrongly.

Fr says: I have heard no plural of it; and he adds that it may here be a maṣdar used as a noun, from the saying فَرَشَهَا ٱللّٰهُ فَرْشًا, meaning بَثَّهَا بَثًّا [see 1].

It is said that in all the senses assigned to it above it has no singular, meaning that it is used alike as singular and plural.

Also bulls or cows; and sheep or goats: so according to some of the commentators on the Qur'ān.

Also such as are fit for nothing but slaughter, of camels, of bulls or cows, and of sheep or goats, as some say; or such as is thrown down for slaughter, of the young of camels, of bulls or cows, and of sheep or goats — used alike as singular and plural.

فَرْشُ الإِبِلِ also means old camels.

Qur’ān 6:143 approximate — somewhere between 6:125 and 6:151 Lane cites “Kur vi. 143”
Qur’ān 6:142 located by this root inside the range Lane’s citation allows
وَمِنَ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ حَمُولَةً وَفَرْشًا ۚ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.

Core sense — moths that fly into a lamp flame; thin pieces of bone; a lock's catchesgenerated

1figurative · مجاز[more light, or unsteady, or light-witted, than a moth that flies into the flame of the lamp]أَطْيَشُ مِنْ فَرَاشَةٍ

Moths and the like that fly into the flame of a lamp: the flying things that fall one after another into the lamp, or lighted wick, to burn themselves; and in modern usage butterflies also. It is a plural, or rather a collective noun, whose ism waḥda is with ة; the first is mentioned in the Qur'ān 101:3.

a man who is light in the head, light-witted, or unsteadyفَرَاشَةٌ

Or it means what one sees resembling small gnats, falling one after another into the fire; or young locusts, when their wings grow and they spread them out and mount one upon another; and silk-worms, apparently so called because they become like these when they come out of the cocoon.

This is said in a proverb.

Such a man is likened to the فراشة of the lamp in lightness, or unsteadiness, and in being of no account.

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ

2

Also thin pieces of bone, such as fly off from any bone when it is struck; or any crusts, or coverings, that are upon bone, apart from the flesh; or the bone of the eyebrow; or what is thin, of the bone of the head; or the bones that come out from the head of a man when it is broken.

Or فَرَاشُ الرَّأْسِ means certain thin bones next to the bone that covers the brain; فَرَاشَةٌ means any thin bone; and فَرَاشَةُ الرَّأْسِ means the thin bones, or pieces of bone, of the head, such as fly off from a blow.

2.1the place where the upper parts of the ribs are set into [the spine of] the backفَرَاشُ الظَّهْرِ
2.2the two extremities of the haunchesالفَرَاشَانِ

In, or at, the نُقْرَة.

2.3

Also the parts of the upper portions of the two shoulder-blades that rise towards the base of the neck and the even part of the back.

2.4

Also two veins beneath the tongue, green, or of a dark or an ashy dust-colour. En-Nadr.

In one work this meaning and the next are wrongly assigned to the singular word. See also الفِرَاشُ.

2.5

Also, or فَرَاشَا اللِّجَامِ according to En-Nadr, or فَرَاشَتَاهُ according to IDrd in his book on the saddle and bridle: the two iron things with which the check-straps of the headstall are made fast. En-Nadr.

2.6the edge of anythingفَرَاشٌ

Aboo-Sa'eed, under the article نسر.

the edge of anythingفَرَاشَةٌ
3

The first of these words also means mud that has dried on the ground after the water has gone.

3.1

It is also said to mean a little water in pools left by torrents; ism waḥda فَرَاشَةٌ.

3.2

Also little bubbles on the surface of the beverage called نَبِيذ, and likewise on the water of sweat; or a little sweat: so says IAar.

4the catches of a lockفَرَاشُ قُفْلٍ

That is, the مَنَاشِب of a lock: apparently the little pins that fall into corresponding holes in the bolt of the Arabian wooden lock of a door when it is pushed into the hole or staple of the door-post, preventing its being drawn back until they are raised by the key, which has small pins made to match the holes, so that when they are put into them they push the catching pins up.

Ism waḥda with ة, according to A 'Obeyd; or فَرَاشَةُ قُفْلٍ means what catches, or sticks fast, in a lock — or, as explained in Farhát's Arabic dictionary, what enters into a lock and makes it fast — meaning its teeth, which are the little pins described above.

IDrd thinks the word is not Arabic; or, used in this way, it is from the same word as means “a thin bone”, because of the thinness of the فراشة of the lock.
