The verb is also given as افحش فِى المَنْطِقِ, فِى الكَلَامِ, or فِى كَلَامِهِ. Maṣdar إِفْحَاشٌ and فُحْشٌ, according to Lh and Kr; but the second is properly a simple noun used as a maṣdar of this verb.

He uttered this. The same is said with فَحَشَ فى المنطق and فحّش فى الكلام, or فى كلامه, and تفحّش فى كلامه; and تَفَاحَشَ has the same meaning too, and also means he showed or revealed such speech.

In a tradition, he was asked about the blood of fleas — whether it made a garment impure — and said this.

Anything, or any evil thing, that is excessive, immoderate, enormous, exorbitant, beyond measure, or overmuch; anything not in agreement with truth and with due rule or measure; foul, evil, bad, abominable, or unseemly; gross, immodest, lewd, or obscene. Applied to a thing or an affair, and to speech or language.

The plural of the first word is فُحَشَآءُ, as جُهَلَآءُ is the plural of جَاهِلٌ, since فُحْش is a kind of جَهْل and the opposite of حِلْم.

It means the same as فَاحِشَةٌ; or it is a thing that reason disapproves and the law regards as foul, evil, or bad. The plural of فَاحِشَةٌ is فَوَاحِشُ.

The word means this particularly, as in the Qur'ān 4:23 and 65:1, and in many other places. Or the فاحشة — the excess — mentioned there is the women's going out without permission; or, Esh-Sháfi'ee: their using foul language against their husband's relations, because of the sharpness of their tongues.
