Core sense — daybreak, dawn; the time of dawn; the dawn prayergenerated

1

[Daybreak; dawn;] the light of morning; so called because it is a cleaving of the darkness from before the light, that is, the redness of the sun in the darkness of night.

The فَجْر at the end of the night is like the شَفَق at the beginning of it.

It is of two kinds. The first is called الفَجْرُ الكَاذِبُ [the false dawn]; it rises without spreading sideways, and appears black, presenting itself like an obstacle on the horizon. See ذَنَبُ السِّرْحَانِ in art. سرح.

The second is called الفَجْرُ الصَّادِقُ [the true dawn]; it is the rising and spreading dawn, which appears rising and fills the horizon with its whiteness. This is what is called عَمُودُ الصُّبْحِ, rising after the first has disappeared; with its rising the day begins, and everything by which a fast would be broken becomes unlawful to the one fasting.

1.1

Hence, the time of the فَجْر.

1.2

And the prayer of that time, the prefixed noun being left out.

1.3figurative · مجازthe troubles of the present lifeالفَجْرُ

1

Roads, or ways; like فِجَاجٌ [plural of فَجٌّ]. It is a plural whose singular is not mentioned.

2

أَيَّامُ الفِجَارِ is a name applied to four أَفْجِرَة, the four أَفْجِرَة, meaning days [that is, conflicts] of the Arabs; a single one of them being called الفِجَارُ.

They took place at 'Okádh; and those engaged in them transgressed, and held allowable everything that should be sacred, as is said in the A.

They were called فِجَارُ الرَّجُلِ, فِجَارُ المَرْأَةِ, فِجَارُ القِرْدِ and فِجَارُ البَرَّاضِ; the last, which was the greatest onslaught, being so called in relation to El-Barrád Ibn-Keys, who slew 'Orweh Er-Rahhál.

They were between Kureysh with their allies of Kináneh on one side and Keys-'Eylán on the other, in the Time of Ignorance; and the final defeat fell upon Keys. It happened in the sacred months, and when they fought in them they said فَجَرْنَا; so Kureysh called this war فِجَار.

فِجَارٌ, like مُفَاجَرَةٌ, is a maṣdar of فَاجَرَ, explained above, on the authority of the R.

1.2

فَاجِرٌ and فَجُورٌ, the latter of which is applied to a woman as well as to a man, and فَاجُورٌ, which is mentioned by Sgh, are all adjectives from فَجَرَ, and most often mean acting immorally, sinfully, or wickedly; immoral; transgressing, or a transgressor; quitting, or one who quits, the way of truth, or of justice; forsaking, or a forsaker of, the command of God; departing, or a departer, from the right way, or from obedience; disobedient; or launching forth, or one who launches forth, into acts of disobedience. The second and third are intensive adjectives.

They also mean committing adultery or fornication; an adulterer or a fornicator. The first also means enchanting, or an enchanter.

The plural of the first is فُجَّارٌ and فَجَرَةٌ; the plural of the second and third is فُجُرٌ.

فُجَرُ is altered from فَاجِرٌ to make it intensive, and is determinate, and is seldom used except in the vocative. In addressing a number of men one says يَا لَفُجَرَ [for يَا آلَ فُجَرَ], just as one says يَا لَغُدَرَ for يَا آلَ غُدَرَ, meaning O you very immoral men. It occurs in a tradition of 'Áïsheh.

And فَجَارِ, like قَطَامِ, is a noun altered from الفَاجِرَةُ [or from فَاجِرَةُ]. To a woman one says يَا فَجَارِ, meaning يَا فَاجِرَةُ [O immoral woman].

In this sense it is a possessive adjective [from فَجَرٌ].
