Form 1مَا فَتِئَ3 senses · 2 main
muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarفَتْءٌ

Core sense — he did not cease doing a thing; he made it ceasegenerated

1.1he did not cease [doing a thing]فَتَاَ

Also with muḍāriʿ ما فَتَأَ and ما فَتُؤَ. These are incomplete, non-attributive verbs.

مَا أَفْتَأَ has the same meaning; this last is of the dialect of Temeem, the first of the dialect of Keys and others.

I did not cease [remembering him]مَا فَتِئْتُ أَذْكُرُهُ

Also مَا فَتِئْتُ أَفْعَلُ.

I did not cease [doing such a thing]ما فَتَأْتُ

maṣdar فَتْءٌ and فُتُوْءٌ.

I did not ceaseما فَتُؤْتُ

Muḍāriʿ فَتُاَ and ما أَفْتَأْتُ.

These verbs are used only in negative phrases in this sense. Sometimes the particle of negation is left out, though it is still meant to be understood, as in تَٱللّٰهِ تَفْتَأُ تَذْكُرُ يُوسُفَ in the Qur'ān 12:85, meaning مَا تَفْتَأُ — so in all the copies of the K, but correctly لَا تَفْتَأُ, i.e. By God, you will not cease remembering Joseph, according to all the grammarians and the commentators on the Qur'ān; for an oath not accompanied by the sign of affirmation denotes negation.

Lane cites “Bd in xii. 85” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.1.1he forgot it, and desisted from itفَتِئَ عَنْهُ

Said of an affair or event; or this is used only in negative phrases.

.

نَسِيَهُ وَٱنْقَدَعَ عَنْهُ in the O, and so in some copies of the K; in other copies of the K انقذع or انفذغ, both of which are clearly miscopyings.

1.2he stilled it, quieted it, or made it ceaseفَتَأَ

As a complete, that is, attributive verb; synonym سَكَّنَ. Or, as some say, he abated or allayed it, synonym كَسَرَ, and he extinguished it.

So says Ibn-Málik, on the authority of Fr, and it is correct. AHei was wrong to charge him with a mistake, for he says it is a miscopying for فَثَأَ, with the three-pointed ث. It is mentioned also by IKoot and IKtt.

I made him cease from the affairفَتَأْتُهُ عَنِ الأَمْرِ

Fr states this usage; the verb here has the sense of سَكَّنْتُهُ.

I extinguished the fireفَتَأْتُ النَّارَ
Qur’ānic occurrences Form 1
12:85
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ تَفْتَؤُا۟ تَذْكُرُ يُوسُفَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا أَوْ تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْهَـٰلِكِينَ

They said: "By Allah! (never) wilt thou cease to remember Joseph until thou reach the last extremity of illness, or until thou die!"

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
