I split his head, that is, a man's head, with the sword; or I struck the upper part of his skull so that it opened over his brain.

I struck him with the staff, or stick—فَأَوْتُهُ بِالعَصَا

فَأْوٌ and فَأْىٌ both mean striking, and also splitting.

, inf. n. فَأْوٌ ; and فَأَيْتُهُ , inf. n. فَأْىٌ ; I split, or clave, his head, i. e. a man's, with the sword: (AZ, T, S, M:) or I struck, or smote, the upper part of his skull so that it opened from over his brain. A party, portion, division, or distinct body; or a company, or congregated body, of men; synonymous with فِرْقَةٌ, طَائِفَةٌ, or جَمَاعَةٌ.
