He, or it, hit, struck, or hurt a man's فُؤَاد [or heart, &c.].

He hit, or shot at and hit, a gazelle or other animal of the chase in its فُؤَاد.

Also same as تَحَرَّقَ [it burned much, as a quasi-passive verb]: so in copies of the K, in SM's copy, in my MS. copy, and in the CK. Or, as in MF's copy of the K, تَحَرَّكَ [it was, or became, in a state of motion, or commotion].

Also فَوَادٌ, which is strange, but said by Esh-Shiháb to be a dialectal variant, and to be disallowed by AHát without reason.

The heart, of man and of an animal other than man; synonym قَلْبٌ [q. v.]. Of the masculine gender only.

So called because of its تَفَأُّد, that is, its تَوَقُّد [or ardour]; or because of its pulsation and commotion; [for which reason also the heart is said to be called القَلْبُ, from التَّقَلُّبُ;] for it is said that the primary meaning of فَأْدٌ is “motion” and “putting in motion”.

Or the heart is called this only when its تَفَأُّد, that is, its تَوَقُّد, is regarded.

Most authors make a distinction between فُؤَاد and قَلْبٌ, the latter of which is said to have a more special meaning than the former. The former is said to be [the pericardium,] the غِشَآء or the وِعَآء of the قَلْب, or its middle, or its interior; the قَلْب being its حَبَّة [q. v.], or its سُوَيْدَآء.

فُؤَادٌ means the appendages of the مَرِىْء [or œsophagus], consisting of the liver, the lungs, and the قَلْب [or heart].

Plural أَفْئِدَةٌ, the only plural known to Sb.

1.1[the mind] did not deny, or think improbable, what he saw—مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَى

Also the mind, or intellect: and this, it is said, may be the meaning of the phrase in the Kur 53:11.

Another reading is ما كَذَّبَ.
