Form 1غَاضَ8 senses · 2 main
maṣdarغَيْضٌmuḍāriʿيَغِيضُ يَفِيضُ

Core sense — it (water) became scanty and sank into the earth; he made it diminishgenerated

1.1it (water) became scanty and sank into the earthانغاض

maṣdars غَيْضٌ, مَغَاضٌ, and مَغِيضٌ.

Said of water: it became scanty and sank into the earth, or disappeared in the earth; or it became scanty and decreased or fell short; or it sank into the earth and went away; or it went away into the earth. The opposite of فَاضَ.

It is of the dialect of El-Hijāz.

1.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferred

Said of a thing, of a flow of milk, and of the price of a commodity: it decreased, or fell short.

1.1.2and the wombs' falling short [of completion or of what is usual], and their exceedingوَمَا تَغِيضُ ٱلْأَرْحَامُ وَمَا تَزْدَادُ

In the Qur'ān 13:9. It is meant in respect of the body of the fetus, the period of gestation, and the number borne; or, as some say, in respect of the menstrual blood.

Or: the wombs' falling short of the nine months of gestation, and their exceeding the nine months. So Zj, O and L, and so in copies of the K, though others have seven months.

Or: the wombs' falling short of completion, so that the fetus dies, and their exceeding so that the gestation becomes complete; on this explanation the reading of seven months in the K may be correct. See also Katádeh's explanation of غَيْضٌ below, which supports that reading.

1.1.3figurative · مجازthe generous became few and perished, and the mean became manyغَاضَ الكِرَامُ وَفَاضَ اللِّئَامُ
1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredHe (God) made it, namely water, become scanty and sink into the earthغَاضَهُ

Muḍāriʿ as above. Or: he made it decrease or fall short; or he made it go away into the earth.

he made it (water) sink into the earth, or diminishاغاضهُ
he made it (water) sink into the earth, or diminishغيّضهُ

Maṣdar تَغْيِيضٌ. So the first of these verbs is transitive as well as intransitive.

and the water was made to become scantyوَغِيضَ ٱلْمَآءُ
and he did away with what appeared of apostasyوَغَاضَ نَبْعَ الرِّدَّةِ
he made his tears diminish, and restrained themغيّض دَمْعَهُ

In the Qur'ān 11:46; or the meaning is, was made to decrease.

A saying of 'Áïsheh, describing her father.

Maṣdar as above. Or: he took the tears from his eye and dashed them away.

A verse of Jereer, given in the article غبض: [They made their tears to flow until they exhausted them, and they said to me, What is it that you have experienced, of love, and we have experienced?]

shāhid
غَيَّضْنَ مِنْ عَبَرَاتِهِنَّ وَقُلْنَ لِىمَا ذَا لَقِيتَ مِنَ الهَوَى وَلَقِينَا

ISd says that من here denotes some; or it may be redundant, according to the opinion of Abu-l-Ḥasan, who holds that it may be so in affirmative as well as negative phrases, giving as an instance قَدْ كَانَ مِنْ مَطَرٍ, meaning قَدْ كَانَ مَطَرٌ.

One relation of this verse gives غَبَّضْنَ, but the former is the right one; see the article غبض.

Qur’ān 11:44 Lane quotes this verse
وَقِيلَ يَـٰٓأَرْضُ ٱبْلَعِى مَآءَكِ وَيَـٰسَمَآءُ أَقْلِعِى وَغِيضَ ٱلْمَآءُ وَقُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ وَٱسْتَوَتْ عَلَى ٱلْجُودِىِّ ۖ وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Then the word went forth: "O earth! swallow up thy water, and O sky! Withhold (thy rain)!" and the water abated, and the matter was ended. The Ark rested on Mount Judi, and the word went forth: "Away with those who do wrong!"Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.2.1

He opened a way, passage, or channel, for it, namely water, to flow out to a مَغِيض.

1.2.2figurative · مجاز — inferred

He lowered it, namely the price of a commodity; اغاضهُ means the same.

1.2.3

And he caused him to suffer loss, or detriment; and he wronged, or injured, him.

Allah doth know what every female (womb) doth bear, by how much the wombs fall short (of their time or number) or do exceed. Every single thing is before His sight, in (due) proportion.

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
