maṣdarغَىٌّ غَوًىmuḍāriʿيَغْوِى يَغْوَى
Core sense — he erred, he deviated from what was right; he suffered indigestion from milkgenerated
1.1
maṣdar غَىٌّ and غَوَايَةٌ (A 'Obeyd) [regarding the latter, see what follows]; and غَوِىَ (A 'Obeyd), but this is not commonly known.
According to the M and K, غَوَايَةٌ, mentioned above as belonging to غَوَى; or this last, which is with fet-h and not to be pronounced with kesr, is a simple noun.
He erred; he deviated from the right way or course, or from what was right. And he was disappointed, or failed to get what he desired. And he laboured, and persisted, in what was vain or false, or in ignorant conduct.
Er-Rāghib: he acted ignorantly from misbelief.

1.3he suffered indigestion from the milk—غَوِىَ
also غَوَى; maṣdar of the former غَوًى.
Said of a young camel, and of a lamb or kid.
That is, he drank the milk until he suffered indigestion, and his belly, or chest, became corrupt; or he drank much of it, so that he suffered indigestion.
ISk: he did not satisfy his thirst with the first milk of his mother, or did not drink of it, nor satisfy his thirst with the milk after it, so that he died of emaciation. Or, said of a kid, he was withheld from sucking until hunger injured him, so that he became emaciated and almost perished. Or he did not obtain milk enough to satisfy his thirst, so that he almost perished.
ISh: said of a child, and of a young camel, he did not find milk enough, so that he did not satisfy his thirst and was seen to be meagre, or emaciated; and Sh says that his companions held this to be the correct meaning.
The adjective applied to the young camel is غَوٍ.
Z has mentioned the reading in the Qur'ān 20:119, وَعَصَى آدَمُ رَبَّهُ فَغَوِىَ, explained as meaning [And Adam disobeyed his Lord, and] suffered indigestion from much eating. But better than this is what Az and Er-Rāghib say: that it is فَغَوَى, and that the meaning is, and his life became evil to him; or he was disappointed; or he acted ignorantly; or some other of the meanings mentioned by the expositors.
