Core sense — abundant; waste, untilled land that water reaches; in a state of immersiongenerated

1

Much, or abundant: applied in this sense to property.

[See also غَمْرٌ.]

2

2.1palm-trees not requiring irrigationغَامِرَةٌ

And [hence, perhaps,] this meaning; but Az did not find it to be known. [See also مُغْتَمِرٌ.]

2.2

Applied to land, and to a house [but written with ة when أَرْضٌ is mentioned, or دَارٌ], it means the opposite of عَامِرٌ: waste; desolate; not flourishing; in a state of ruin; خَرَابٌ.

[Land is called by this term] because it is overflowed by water, so that it cannot be sown; or because it is covered with sand or dust; or because water generally oozes out from it, so that it produces only reeds and the بَرْدِىّ [that is, papyrus or other rushes].

By غَامِرٌ is meant ذُو غَمْرٍ, as one says هَمٌّ نَاصِبٌ meaning ذُو نَصَبٍ.

Or any land that is not tilled so as to be fit for sowing and planting; or land that is unsown but capable of being sown, so called because the water reaches it and comes over it.

Of the measure فَاعِلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ, like the adjectives in سِرٌّ كَاتِمٌ and مَآءٌ دَافِقٌ; and made of the measure فال only to correspond to عَامِرٌ as its opposite.

Waste land which water does not reach is not called غَامِرٌ, but is called قَفْرٌ.

It is said in a tradition [which shows that the last two explanations given above are correct] that 'Omar imposed a tax of a دِرْهَم and a قَفِيز upon every جَرِيب [of land], both عَامِر and غَامِر; and he did this so that the people should not be slack in sowing.
