1.1the new moon was veiled from the people, so that it was not seen—غُمَّ الهِلَالُ
He covered it, veiled it, or concealed it, namely a thing: this is the primary meaning..
. The veiling may be by clouds or something else, or by thin clouds intercepting it.
the same—عَلَى النَّاسِ
In a tradition: فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا العِدَّةَ — that is, if it (the new moon) is veiled from you, then complete the reckoning of Shaʿbán as thirty days, so that the entering upon the fast of Ramaḍán may rest on knowledge.
Az says that غُمَّ and أُغْمِىَ and غُمِىَ all mean the same, and all three occur in that tradition according to different relations of it. [See also 1 in art. غمى.]
1.1.1the moon concealed the stars—غَمَّ القَمَرُ النُّجُومَ
Or it almost concealed the light of the stars.
1.1.2the news was confused or vague to him, hard or impossible to understand—غُمَّ عَلَيْهِ الخَبَرُ
Like أُغْمِىَ. Or: it was obscure, not clear, to him.
1.1.3it covered [or was as though it covered] his heart—غَمَّهُ

1.1.4he put over his mouth and his nostrils the غِمَامَة—غَمَّهُ
The pronoun relates to an ass or the like..
This is a thing like the كِعَام [or muzzle], or like the فِدَام [which here seems to mean much the same as كعام].
Or: he put over his mouth a nose-bag or the like, to stop him feeding; this is called a غِمَامَة. [The verb rendered “put over” in these explanations is أَلْقَمَ, for which I find in its own place no meaning that would fit exactly here.]
Or غِمَامَةٌ is a kind of bag for the mouth of a camel and the like, the mouth being put into it; plural غَمَائِمُ.
he covered his mouth with the غمامة—غَمَّهُ بِالغِمَامَةِ

1.1.5it rose upon, or above, the thing, as though forming a covering over it—غَمَّ الشَّىْءَ

Mentioned on the authority of IAar, who cites as an example the saying of En-Nemir Ibn-Towlab, seemingly describing a رَوْضَة or meadow: [Not depastured, the trees called ضال rising above the herbage of its fertile tracts, or its tracts near water]
shāhidأُنُفٌ يَغُمُّ الضَّالُ نَبْتَ بِحَارِهَا
See also form 8.

[غَمَّ is also intransitive.] Maṣdars غَمٌّ and غُمُومٌ and أَغَمَّ.
Or both verbs, said of a day and of the sky, mean it brought غَمّ, distress affecting the breathing, arising from close heat or from clouds.

Of the class of تَعِبَ; the first person is غَمِمْتُ.. [See also غَمَمٌ below.]
