1meaning high-pricedغَالِيَةٌ

[Galia moschata,] a well-known sort of perfume: a compound of perfumes; musk mixed or boiled [with other perfumes]; or a perfume composed of musk, ambergris, camphor, and oil of ben.

It is said that the first to call it by this name was Suleymán Ibn-'Abd-El-Melik, and that he did so because it is a compound boiled together over the fire.

Or it was named by Mo'áwiyeh: 'Abd-Allah Ibn-Jaafar went in to him with the odour of perfume spreading from him, so he said, “What is your perfume, O 'Abd-Allah?” and he answered, “musk and ambergris combined with oil of ben”; whereupon Mo'áwiyeh spoke the words above.

Hence some hold the word to belong to art. غلو, and their opinion is strengthened by the fact that غَلْوَى means the same. See art. غلو.
