Core sense — a young man, a youth, a boy; a male slave; a hired servantgenerated
1figurative · مجاز
[A young man, youth, boy, or male child:] one whose mustache is growing forth or has grown forth; or one from the time of his birth until he reaches the period termed شَبَاب [meaning young manhood ]; or the same as اِبْنٌ صَغِيرٌ [meaning a son that has not reached puberty].
It is also applied to such as is termed كَهْل [i.e. one of middle age, or between that age and the time when his hair has become mixed with hoariness].
Az states that he heard the Arabs call thus the new-born child and also the كَهْل.
The female is [sometimes] termed غُلَامَةٌ; [i.e.] غُلَامَةٌ occurs in poetry, applied to a جَارِيَة.
The plural of غُلَامٌ is غِلْمَةٌ, a plural of paucity, and أَغْلِمَةٌ [also a plural of paucity]; or of these two plurals they used only the first, or some of them did so; and غِلْمَانٌ [a plural of multitude], or this is a plural of غِلْمَةٌ.
The diminutive of غُلَامٌ is غُلَيِّمٌ, and that of غِلْمَةٌ is أُغَيْلِمَةٌ, as if it were the diminutive of أَغْلِمَةٌ, though [it has been said that] they did not use this last word; but some of them said غُلَيْمَةٌ, which is regular.

It is also used to mean a male slave, just as جَارِيَةٌ is used to mean a female slave.
1.2figurative · مجاز
And to mean a hireling [or servant].
