muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarغَلْقٌ فَلْقٌ غَلَقٌ

Core sense — the pledge became a forfeit to its receiver; it stuck fast; he became angrygenerated

1.1

As a synonym of أَغْلَقَ: see that word.

1.2

He went away.

1.2.1he went far into the landغَلَقَ فِى الأَرْضِ

.

Also فَلَقَ. (Ibn-ʿAbbād)

1.3

غَلِقَ, said of a door: see form 7.

1.3.1figurative · مجاز — inferredthe pledge became a rightful possession [i. e. a forfeit] to its receiver, not redeemed within the stipulated timeغَلِقَ الرَّهْنُ

Zuheyr says: [And she separated herself from you with a pledge for which there is nothing to redeem it, on the day of parting, so the pledge has become a forfeit to its receiver]

shāhid 1
وَفَارَقَتْكَ بِرَهْنٍ لَا فَكَاكَ لَهُيَوْمَ الوَدَاعِ فَأَمْسَى الرَّهْنُ قَدْ غَلِقَا

— he means that she received his heart as a pledge and went away with it.

Ows Ibn-Ḥajar says

shāhid 2
أَبُو غَلَقٍ فِى لَيْلَتَيْنِ مُؤَجَّلِ

— meaning: the owner of a pledge that has become a rightful possession to its receiver, the period for its release being two nights. He likens a captivated heart to this.

maṣdar غَلَقٌ or غُلُوقٌ, or both.

Or غَلِقَ الرَّهْنُ فِى يَدِ المُرْتَهِنِ, or غَلِقَ الرَّهْنُ, means: the pledge remained in the possession of the receiver, the pledger being unable to redeem it.

it shall not become a forfeit to the receiver with what is involved in itلَا يَغْلَقُ بِمَا فِيهِ لَكَ غُنْمُهُ وُعَلَيْكَ غُرْمُهُ
to him it shall return, and to him shall belong its increaseلَهُ غُنْمُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ غُرْمُهُ
to you shall belong its increase, its growth, and its excess in valueلَكَ غُنْمُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ غُرْمُهُ

According to the Bāriʿ, it is when a man pledges a commodity and says, “If I do not pay you within such a time, the pledge shall be yours for the debt.” This is forbidden in a tradition.

From a tradition of the Prophet on this subject.

Or, by an explanation of the first clause in the Msb: it shall not become a rightful possession to the receiver for the debt for which it was pledged. You shall have the regaining of it, and its increase, and growth, and excess in value, if it has any, and on you shall be the obligation of the debt belonging to it, and the bearing of any unavoidable damage it may have suffered.

So A ʿObeyd, who takes the owner to be meant: if it has become defective, or has perished unavoidably, he shall be responsible for it and shall pay the debt to the one to whom it is owed, without any of the debt being remitted to him in compensation.

Here the pledger is meant; and on the receiver shall be the responsibility to make compensation for it if it perishes through his fault while in his possession.

There are other, somewhat different readings and explanations of this tradition, but the ones given here seem the most approvable. See also غُنْمٌ, and see the article رهن.

1.3.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhis person has become a forfeit to his creditors by reason of debtغَلِقَتْ رَقَبَتُهُ بِالدَّيْنِ

رَقَبَة here means his person.

1.3.4figurative · مجازhis heart stuck fast in the possession of such a woman or girlغَلِقَ قَلْبُهُ فِى يَدِ فُلَانَةَ
he became excited by sharpness of temper, and stuck fast in his sharpness of temperاِحْتَدَّ فَغَلِقَ فِى حِدَّتِهِ

He, or it, stuck fast.

he stuck fast in what was vain, or falseغَلِقَ فِى البَاطِلِ

غَلِقَ is said of anything that sticks fast in a thing and cleaves to it.

on this sense El-Farezdak says: [Had they been persons who had stuck fast in poverty and hunger, cleaving to it]

shāhid

.

1.3.5figurative · مجاز — inferredthe oath of angerيَمِينُ الغَلَقِ

He became disquieted, or disquieted by grief; or angry, and excited by sharpness of temper.

beware of being disquieted by grief [or anger]إِيَّاكَ وَالغَلَقَ

Some of the lawyers say it is so called because the one who swears it closes a door against himself, preventing him from advancing or drawing back.

Or, as some say, the meaning is لَا يُغْلَقُ التَّطْلِيقَاتُ حَتَّى لَا يَبْقَى مِنْهَا شَىْءٌ [i. e. the sentences of divorce shall not be concluded all at once, by saying “You are trebly divorced,” so that none of them remains]; for one should divorce in accordance with the سُنَّة.

Or, according to the TA, إِيَّاكَ وَالغَلَقَ seems to mean: beware of the state of straitness.

being in a state of perditionالغَلَقُ

It also means contractedness of the mind or bosom, and little patience. (Mbr)

1.3.6the palm-tree had worms in the bases of its branches and so stopped bearing fruitغَلِقَتِ النَّخْلَةُ

and أُغْلِقَتْ عَنِ الإِثْمَارِ has the same meaning.

1.3.7figurative · مجازthe camel's back became galled with galls that cannot be curedغَلِقَ ظَهْرُ البَعِيرِ

The whole of his back is seen to be two portions of scarred skin, left by galls that have begun to heal, with the two sides of it glistening.

ISh says that with the worst galls of a camel the saddle and saddle-cloth cannot be raised from contact with him.

maṣdarإِغْلَاقٌ غَلْقٌ

Core sense — he locked, or closed, the door; he constrained him; he surrendered himgenerated

4.1he locked, or closed, the doorغَلَقَهُ

He made the door fast with a غَلَق so that it could not be opened except with a key: he locked the door, or bolted it; or he closed it.. The opposite of فَتَحَهُ.

the same in meaning. Mentioned by IDrd on the authority of AZ, but rare; or a mispronunciation; or bad, and rejected.

غَلْقٌ is said to be the substantive from أَغْلَقَ. A poet says: [And a door that, when it turns to be locked, or closed, creaks]

shāhid 1
وَبَابٍ إِذَا مَا مَالَ لِلْغَلْقِ يَصْرِفُ

.

I locked, or closed, the doorsغَلَّقْتُ الأَبْوَابَ

The verb has teshdeed here to denote that the objects are many; it is also used with teshdeed to denote muchness of the action, or intensiveness, for one also says غلّق البَابَ, a chaste phrase.

El-Isbahānee says that غَلَّقْتُ means I locked, or closed, many doors, or a door several times, or a door well and thoroughly.

One also says أَغْلَقْتُ الأَبْوَابَ, said by Sb to be good Arabic, but this is rare. El-Farezdak says: [I ceased not to open doors and to close them until I came to Aboo-ʿAmr Ibn-ʿAmmār]

shāhid 2

Applied, in a tradition, to one of those for whom the Prophet will intercede; the sins that have burdened the man's back are likened to the weight of the camel's load.

they displaced the joints of one of a camel's vertebrae and wounded his hump, so that he might not be ridden and no use be made of his backأَغْلَقُوا بَعِيرًا

It is also said that الإِغْلَاقُ was a practice of the Time of Ignorance: when the camels of any one of them reached a hundred, they did this.

Here سَنَاسِن is the plural of سِنْسِنٌ.

That camel was termed مُعَنًّى [see the article عنو].

Nounغَلْقَةٌ1 sense

Core sense — a small, very bitter tree used for preparing hides for tanninggenerated

1

So as heard by AḤn from El-Bekree and others; غِلْقَةٌ as heard by him from one of the Desert-Arabs of Rabeeʿah, the first being the more common; and also غَلْقَى.

ISk: a certain tree, or plant, with which the people of Eṭ-Ṭāʾif prepare hides for tanning by the treatment termed عَطْنٌ [see عَطَنَ الجِلْدَ].

According to information given to AḤn by an Arab of the desert: a certain small tree, or plant, resembling the عِظْلِم, extremely bitter, not eaten by anything.

It is dried, then bruised, and beaten with water, and skins are soaked in it, so that no hair, nor a particle of fur, nor a bit of flesh remains on them; this is done when they wish to put the skins into the tan, whether they are of oxen, of sheep or goats, or of other animals. It is bruised and carried into the various districts or towns for this purpose. It is found in El-Ḥijāz and Tihāmeh.

AḤn says it is a tree not to be endured for pungency; the gatherer of it fears for his eyes from its exhalation or its juice; it is of the utmost efficiency for tanning.

Lth says it is a bitter tree, and a poison: a mixture is made with its leaves for wolves and dogs, which kills them; and it is used for tanning as well.

AḤn says the Abyssinians poison weapons with it, cooking it and then smearing the weapons with it, and it kills the one it strikes.

According to Forskål, the names “Harmal حرمل” and “Ghalget ed dib غلقت الديب”, by which he means حَرْمَل and غَلْقَة الذِّئْب, are now applied to Peganum harmala.

Core sense — a lock; a gaming arrow, used in the game of chancegenerated

1

See غَلَقٌ.

1.1

An arrow — that is, any arrow — used in the game called المَيْسِر; مِغْلَاقٌ is a dialectal variant in this sense.

Or, according to Lth, المِغْلَقُ means السَّهْمُ السّابِعُ فِى مُضَعَّفِ المَيْسِرِ, that is, the seventh arrow, seemingly belonging to the class, of the arrows of the game of الميسر, to which manifold portions are assigned.

For المُضَعَّفُ, as used of the game called الميسر, I find no explanation other than as a name for “the second of the arrows termed الغُفْل, to which no portion is assigned”; and that cannot be meant here, since the seventh arrow, commonly called المُعَلَّى, has seven portions assigned to it. So it seems that مُضَعَّف is used here, if not mistakenly, in a sense which, though admissible, is unusual in such a case.

Plural مَغَالِقُ; in the CK, wrongly, مَغَالِيقُ.

Or المُغَالِقُ is one of the adjectives applied to the winning arrows, and not one of their particular names: they are those that make what is played for a forfeit to the player. So according to Az, who says that Lth has made a mistake in his explanation.
