Core sense — it was, or became, thick, or coarse; he was rough, or rude, in mannergenerated

and the verb also occurs as غَلَظَ.

Maṣdar of the former غِلَظٌ, and غِلَاظَةٌ, غِلْظَةٌ, غُلْظَةٌ, غَلْظَةٌ; all of these are maṣdars of غَلُظَ, or else the last three — the second and third of which are mentioned in the Bāriʿ on the authority of IAar — are simple substantives; and perhaps غَلْظٌ may be a maṣdar of the latter verb.

It (a thing) was, or became, thick, gross, big, bulky, or coarse; it became غلِّيظ; استغلظ is used in the same way.

the seed-produce became thick, or strong, or well grown and thick—استغلظ الزَّرْعُ

The same as غَلُظَ. The like is said of any plant or tree.

the ear of corn produced grain—غَلُظَتِ السُّنْبُلَةُ

Said of a crime; but this is by analogy only, not on the authority of hearsay.

Muhammad is the messenger of Allah; and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure. On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Taurat; and their similitude in the Gospel is: like a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem, (filling) the sowers with wonder and delight. As a result, it fills the Unbelievers with rage at them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness, and a great Reward.

They are substantives from غَلُظَ, and mean thickness, grossness, bigness, bulkiness, or coarseness; also roughness, or ruggedness.

(Esh-Shāfiʿee.)

Esh-Shāfiʿee: it consists of thirty camels of the kind called حِقَّة, thirty of the kind called جَذَعَة, and forty between the ثَنِيَّة and the بَازِل, all pregnant.
