Core sense — land with no way-marks or cultivation; an unmarked arrow; an unbranded beastgenerated
1
Land without cultivation; or without any way-mark; or with neither way-mark nor cultivation; or not rained upon; or unknown, with no known trace or vestige in it. According to the M, a desert, or waterless desert, that makes one lose the way, with no sign or mark in it.
Plural أَغْفَالٌ, which has the same meaning as مَوَاتٌ.
Lh mentions the phrase أَرْضٌ أَغْفَالٌ, as though they made every portion of it what is called غُفْلٌ; and بِلَادٌ أَغْفَالٌ means [tracts of country] with no way-marks to be guided by.
1.1
Also a road, or way, &c., in which there is no sign or mark by which it may be known.
1.2
Also a gaming-arrow with no mark on it [no notch to distinguish it]; one that has no portion assigned to it and no fine.
According to Lh one says قِدَاحٌ غُفْلٌ, using the singular form of the adjective, meaning gaming arrows in which there are no notches, and to which no portion and no fine is assigned.
They used to be added to give extra weight to the collection of arrows for fear of causing suspicion of foul play, that is, to increase the number.
They were four: the first called المُصَدَّرُ, the next المُضَعَّفُ, the next المَنِيحُ, and the next السَّفِيحُ.
1.3
Also a beast having no brand on it; and a she-camel that is not branded, so that the poor-rate may not be considered due for her.
غُفُلٌ is a dialectal variant of it, or is used by poetic licence; the plural is أَغْفَالٌ.
The plural is also applied to camels, or cattle, that yield no milk.
1.4
And a مُصْحَف [or copy of the Kur-án] bare of the signs called عَوَاشِر [plural of عَاشِرَةٌ] and the like of these.
1.5
And a book, or writing, that is anonymous, whose author is not named; poetry whose author is unknown; and a poet unknown and unnamed.
Plural أَغْفَالٌ.
1.6
Also a man inexperienced in affairs.
One whose beneficence is not hoped for and whose evil is not feared, he being like the shackled man who is neglected: plural as above.
And one having no grounds of pretension to respect or honour; or, as some say, one of whom people do not know what he possesses.
1.7
And the fur (literally furs, or soft portions of hair, أَوْبَار [perhaps because long left unshorn]) of camels.
