muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarغَطْوٌ غَطْىٌ
Core sense — he, or it, covered the thing; the night grew dark; the water rose highgenerated
1.1he, or it, covered, or concealed, the thing; and came upon it, or over it—اغطاهُ
First person غَطَوْتُ, maṣdar غَطْوٌ and غَطَى الشَّىْءَ; also first person غَطَيْتُ, maṣdar غَطْىٌ and غَطَى عَلَيْهِ.
Also غطّاهُ, maṣdar تَغْطِيَةٌ, or this has an intensive meaning; [but it is very often used in the sense of غَطَاهُ without teshdeed.]
غَطَّى عَلَيْهِ المِشْمَلَةَ, a phrase used by Lh, is thought by ISd to mean: he covered, or enveloped, him with the garment called مشملة, that is, غَطَّاهُ بِهَا. Mentioned under شمل.
1.1.1the night covered such a one with its darkness—غَطَىَ اللَّيْلُ فُلَانًا
Also غطّى in the same meaning.
the night was, or became, dark—غَطَى اللَّيْلُ
The first verb is also said of the night as though intransitive, an object apparently being understood.
Or: it covered, or concealed, everything with its darkness; or, as some say, it rose, and covered, and clothed, everything.
also غَطَا, maṣdar غَطْوٌ and غُطُوٌّ.
[Freytag states that اغطى is used in this sense in the Deewán of Jereer; like اغضى.]
1.1.2O God, put a covering upon, or over, his heart—اَللّٰهُمَّ ٱغْطِ عَلَى قَلْبِهِ
A saying of the Arabs; its meaning is given as أَغْشِ.
1.1.3youthfulness, or young manhood, clothed him, or invested him as with clothes—غَطَاهُ الشَّبَابُ
Maṣdar غَطْىٌ and غُطِىٌّ [but the latter I think doubtful, for its measure is irregular for a maṣdar of a transitive verb]; the meaning is أَلْبَسَهُ. Also غطّاهُ.
the sap, or vigour, of youth became full, or mantled, in a person—غَطَى الشَّبَابُ
Here the same verb is used intransitively; in the CK, wrongly, الشّابُّ.; maṣdar غَطْىٌ and غُطِىٌّ, thus in the S and according to ISd, IKtt and Sgh, but according to the K غُطْىٌ. The meaning is اِمْتَلَأَ.
1.1.4the tree had long branches spreading over the ground, covering what was around it—غَطَتِ الشَّجَرَةُ
Mentioned under غطى; like أَغْطَت.
1.1.5the water rose high and became abundant—غَطَا المَآءُ
Also غَطَى.
it rose, and became high, upon, or over, the thing—غَطَا عَلَى الشَّىْءِ
Said of anything.
the overflowing of the sea, or great river—غَطَيَانُ البَحْرِ
1.1.6the she-camel proceeded in her course, and stretched forth—غَطَتِ النَّاقَةُ
.
1.1.7he did to him what caused him harm; or what displeased, grieved, or vexed, him—فَعَلَ بِهِ مَا غَطَاهُ
Given in the M with the explanation سَآءَهُ; but this may be a mistranscription for عَظَاهُ, which is given in the K in this sense, or the two verbs may be dialectal variants. [See also a similar explanation of غَطَاهُ in the first paragraph of شرى.]
