Form 1غَصَّ5 senses · 1 main

Core sense — his throat became choked by food; he was choked with ragegenerated

1.1his throat, or fauces, became choked, or obstructed, by foodغَصَّ

Second person غَصِصْتَ and غَصَصْتَ, the latter irregular. [See 1 in art. عض.]

when the second person of the past tense is غَصِصْتَ, and يَغُصُّ when it is the other form mentioned above; maṣdar غَصَصٌ or غَصٌّ, the former when the muḍāriʿ is يَغَصُّ and the latter when it is يَغُصُّ.

Apparently اِغْتَصَّ has the same meaning. Some of those skilled in lexicology distinguish the following usages.

his throat, or fauces, became choked by beverageشَرِقَ

Also said of choking by the spittle, water, and the like [see art. شرق].

his throat, or fauces, became choked by a boneشَجِىَ
his throat, or fauces, became choked with spittleجَرِضَ
his throat, or fauces, became choked by the waterغَصَّ بِالمَآءِ

Or: the water stopped in his throat and he was hardly able to swallow it.

on this sense Every one of these is sometimes used in place of any of the others.

1.1.1figurative · مجازhe diedغَصَّ بِرِيقِهِ

Literally, his throat, or fauces, became choked by his spittle.

1.1.2figurative · مجازhe was, or became, choked with wrath, or rageغَصَّ بِالغَيْظِ
1.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredhe became grieved, or disquieted in mindغَصَّ

It seems to have this meaning when used alone, like شَجِىَ.

The CK seems to indicate that اغتصّ means the same: see غُصَّةٌ.

1.1.4figurative · مجاز — inferredthe land became straitened, as though choked, by usغَصَّتْ بِنَا الأَرْضُ
the sitting-place became straitened, or choked up, by its peopleغَصَّ المَجْلِسُ بِأَهْلِهِ

Also اغتصّ.
