In a tradition about prayer, it means: and cleanse me from sins.

May God cleanse you from your sin—غَسَلَ ٱللّٰهُ حَوْبَتَكَ

As one does in cleansing himself from impurity.

It means مَا فَرَغُوا and مَا تَخَلَّصُوا, that is, apparently, they did not become free from the consequences of the Day of the Camel (the famous battle between the forces of 'Alee and those of Áïsheh).

In a tradition about preparation for the Friday prayers: مَنْ غَسَلَ وَٱغْتَسَلَ, as some relate it, or من غَسَّلَ واغتسل, as others relate it.

The second reading is said to mean: whoever has intercourse with his wife [before going to the mosque]; El-Kutabee says that most hold this to be the meaning, that is, so that he should not see on his way anything that might turn his heart away [from devotion]; [and then washes himself;] and Az held غَسَلَ without teshdeed to be correct in this sense.

Or, according to the reading غسّل, the meaning is: whoever performs the ablution termed وُضُوءْ fully, washing every member [of those that are to be washed] three times, and then washes himself for the Friday prayers.

According to IAmb, it means: whoever washes himself after الجِمَاع, and then washes himself for the Friday prayers.

According to the K, التَّغْسِيلَ means going beyond the ordinary bounds in washing the members. Whoever explains it as meaning the causing of a woman to become obliged to perform a total ablution, بِأَنْ وَطِئَهَا, says what is unlikely and departs from the authorities on it.

O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.

(Mgh, K, TA) from الاِغْتِسَالُ , (Mgh, TA,) or, as some say. the latter is the inf. n. and the former is the subst., (MF, TA,) He washed it; with water ( بِالمَآءِ ): (MA:) غَسْلُ الشّىْءِ signifies the removing of dirt, or filth, and the like thereof, from the thing, by making water to run over it. O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (Except when travelling on the road), until after washing your whole body. Core sense — he asked someone to wash, as a cure for the evil eyegenerated

10.1[The evil eye is a truth; so when you are asked to wash, wash]—فَٱغْسِلُوا العَيْنُ حَقٌّ فَإِذَا ٱسْتُغْسِلْتُمْ

It is said in a tradition. That is: when the man smitten by another's eye demanded [what is meant here], he brought to the man who had smitten him a bowl with water in it; that man would put his hand into it, rinse his mouth [with some of it], then spit it out into the bowl; then he would wash his face in it; then he would put in his left hand and pour over his right hand; then he would put in his right hand and pour over his left hand; [then he would put in his left hand (a clause omitted in my original),] and pour over his right elbow; then he would put in his right hand and pour over his left elbow; then he would put in his left hand and pour over his right foot; then he would put in his right hand and pour over his left foot; then he would put in his left hand and pour over his right knee; then he would put in his right hand and pour over his left knee.

Then he would wash what is termed دَاخِلَةُ الإِزَارِ [explained in art. دخل]; and he would not put the bowl on the ground. Then he would pour that used water over the head of the person smitten with the eye, from behind him, in one pouring; and he would be cured, by God's permission.

IKoot: a noun from الاغتسال, and as such meaning a complete washing of oneself, of the whole person.

It is done because of جَنَابَة, and of childbirth, and for the Friday prayers, and is the washing of the dead; in other cases the word غَسْلٌ, with fet-h, is used.

One says غُسُلٌ as well as غُسْلٌ, the former being a dialectal variant of the latter.

El-Kumeyt says, describing a wild ass: [Beneath the tree called أَلَآءَة, in two sorts of washing that continued through the night upon him with much pouring and much dropping]

Core sense — a wash for the head, made of marsh-mallows and the likegenerated

A preparation for washing the head, made of خِطْمِىّ [or marsh-mallows] and other things of a similar kind, [with water,] such as [leaves of] the lote-tree called سِدْر, and طِين, or طِينَةُ الرَّأْسِ [meaning fullers' earth, which is often used in the bath and elsewhere instead of soap], and أُشْنَان [or potash]: [and apparently any wash for the head].

غِسْلَةٌ means the same; and it also means leaves of the myrtle; and perfume, طِيبٌ; and what a woman puts into her hair when combing and dressing it.

غِسْلَةٌ مُطَرَّاةٌ is myrtle [leaves] made fragrant with aromatic perfumes, used in combing and dressing the hair. One should not say غَسْلَةٌ.

IAar cites this verse of 'Abd-Er-Rahmán Ibn-Dárah El-Ghatafánee: [And, O Leylà, the wash for the head, as long as you remain without a husband, shall be unlawful to me: the wash for the head shall not touch me]

فَيَا لَيْلَ إِنَّ الغِسْلَ مَا دُمْتِ أَيِّمًاعَلَىَّ حَرَامٌ لَا يَمَسُّنِىَ الغِسْلُ

لَيْلَ is a contraction of لَيْلَى; but in the O it is يا جُمْلُ, O Juml.

That is: I will not need the wash for the head through my جِمَاع with any woman other than her; he says this in eager desire to take her in marriage.

[For] whatever comes out of a wound or sore when it is washed is called غِسْلِين.

What is washed off from the bodies of the unbelievers in the fire; or what flows from the skins of the people of the fire, such as thick pus and the like; so explained by Fr and Seer, as though it were washed off from them.

Mujáhid: a certain food of the people of the fire. El-Kelbee says it is what the fire has cooked of their flesh, and which has fallen off and is eaten by them.

Ed-Dahhák: a species of trees in the fire; and he says the same of الضَّرِيعُ.

Lth: what is intensely hot.

The ى and ن are augmentative.

The former is also used as an adjective with a feminine noun, as is غَسِيلَةٌ; or this last is used like a noun, as نَطِيحَةٌ and ذَبِيحَةٌ are, and not as an adjective, as is said in the S [and O].

The plural of غَسِيلٌ is غَسْلِى and غُسَلَآءُ; and the plural of غَسِيلَةٌ [and apparently of غَسِيلٌ used as a feminine adjective] is غَسَالَى or غُسَالَى.

Handhaleh Ibn-er-Ráhib was called غَسِيلُ المَلَائِكَةِ [the washed of the angels], because he died a martyr on the day of Ohod and the angels washed him, according to the Prophet, who said that he saw them washing him.
