Nounالغَاسِقُ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — the night, when it comes in; the moon; flowinggenerated

1[And from the mischief] of the night when it comes inوَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ

It signifies the night.

So according to El-Hasan El-Basree; or the beginning of the night, as El-Hasan is also related to have said; or the night when the شَفَق [or redness in the horizon after sunset] disappears.

Er-Rāghib: the night is said to be so called because it is colder than the day, [for] الغَاسِقُ also means the cold [like الغَسَاقُ]; or what is meant in the verse of the Qur'ān quoted above is the accident happening in the night.

Or الغَاسِقُ means the moon, and this is said to be what is meant in the verse of the Qur'ān; the Prophet is related to have said so to Áïsheh, that is, the verse means [the mischief of] the moon when it is eclipsed.

Or what is meant in that verse is الثُّرَيَّا [that is, the asterism called the Pleiades] when it sets [aurorally ], because diseases and pestilences are frequent at that period, and are removed at the period of its [auroral] rising [in the opposite season of the year], as is related in a tradition.

Or the sun when it sets; or the day when it enters upon the night; or the serpent called الأَسْوَد when it smites, or turns over; or, according to Sub, Iblees when he suggests evil; or, according to I'Ab and several others, from the mischief of the ذَكَر when it becomes erect — a strange explanation.

الغَسَّاقُ is like الغَاسِقُ [but in what sense or senses is not said]; each is an adjective in which the quality of a substantive is predominant.

1.1flowingغَاسِقٌ

Applied in this sense by a poet to a source, or spring, with no relation to darkness.
