1.1I know what is meant [from this speech]—عَرَفْتُ مَا يُغْزَى مِنْ هٰذَا الكَلَامِ

. He willed, or desired, it; he sought it; he aimed at it, intended it, or meant it; synonymous with أَرَادَهُ, طَلَبَهُ and قَصَدَهُ [the first of which is often used in the same senses as the second and third]; also اغتزاهُ, this last mentioned by ISd as synonymous with قَصَدَهُ.

That is, what is willed or desired, مَا يُرَادُ.

my aim, or meaning, is such a thing—غَزْوِى كَذَا

1.1.1he went out to fight with, and plunder, the enemy in their own country—غَزَا العَدُوَّ

Maṣdar غَزْوٌ and غَزَوَانٌ, or, as some say, غَزْوَانٌ, mentioned by Sb, and غَزَاوَةٌ [but see what is said of this last at the end of this entry].

Er-Rāghib: he went forth, or made his way, to wage war, or to fight, with the enemy.

[And غَزَا alone, with the object understood, often means the same, or he engaged in a warring, or warring and plundering, expedition.]

غَزَاوَةٌ, mentioned above, has a measure which in most cases belongs to a maṣdar of an intransitive verb, and it seems to be a maṣdar whose verb is غَزُوَ, meaning جَادَ غَزْوُهُ [that is, Excellent, or how excellent, is his engaging in a warring, or warring and plundering, expedition!]; it seems to be similar to قَضُوَ meaning جَادَ قَضَآءُهُ, and to ضَرُبَتْ يَدُهُ meaning جَادَ ضَرْبُهَا.

(TA.) غَزَاوَةٌ , mentioned above, is of a measure which in most instances is that of an inf. n. of an intrans. verb, and it seems to be an inf. n. of which the verb is غَزُوَ , meaning جَادَ غَزْوُهُ [i. e. Excellent, or how excellent, is his engaging in a warring, or warring and plundering, expedition, or in such expeditions!]; and to be similar to قَضُوَ meaning جَادَ قَضَآءُهُ , and ضَرُبَتْ يَدُهُ meaning جَادَ ضَرْبُهَا . Nounغَزْوَةٌ1 sense

Or the first means a single act of الغَزْو, that is, a single warring, or warring and plundering, expedition; and so does مَغْزَاةٌ.

غَزَاةٌ is the noun from غَزَوْتُ العَدُوَّ, in the sense explained above, that is, the act of الغَزْو; or it means [a campaign, that is,] the work of a year.

The plural of غَزْوَةٌ (and of غَزَاةٌ, for this is originally غَزَوَةٌ) is غَزَوَاتٌ; the plural of مَغْزَاةٌ is مَغَازٍ, and this last plural is applied to the غَزَوَات of Mohammad.
