Form 1غَزَلَتِ القُطْنَ3 senses

The east wind is to the Arabs like the zephyr to us.

It is apparently الرُّبَا, the name of a place, written الرُّبَى in the K in article ربو, and said in the TA under that article to occur in poetry.

And هُوَ يُغَازِلُ رَغَدًا مِنَ العَيْشِ, apparently meaning: he plays the wanton with ample, easy, and pleasant means of subsistence.

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّتِى نَقَضَتْ غَزْلَهَا مِنۢ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ أَنكَـٰثًا تَتَّخِذُونَ أَيْمَـٰنَكُمْ دَخَلًۢا بَيْنَكُمْ أَن تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِىَ أَرْبَىٰ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ ۚ إِنَّمَا يَبْلُوكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ ۚ وَلَيُبَيِّنَنَّ لَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ مَا كُنتُمْ فِيهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ

And be not like a woman who breaks into untwisted strands the yarn which she has spun, after it has become strong. Nor take your oaths to practise deception between yourselves, lest one party should be more numerous than another: for Allah will test you by this; and on the Day of Judgment He will certainly make clear to you (the truth of) that wherein ye disagree.

It is used in this way as a possessive adjective, [not as an ism fāʿil of غَزِلَ, because this differs in meaning from تَغَزَّلَ]; that is, it properly means ذُوغَزَلٍ.

Kudámeh: or it means displaying amorous gestures and behaviour, and foolish, youthful conduct such as suits women, with the passionate love he feels for them, so that they may incline to him.

The girl, or young woman, is likened to it in [the opening of an ode by what is termed] التَّشْبِيب, and for that reason the adjective and the verb there are made masculine.

This is after it has become a ثَنِىّ: or in the stage after that in which it is termed طَلًا. (AHát)

Or from the time of its birth until it attains its swiftest running, which is when it puts its legs together, [apparently meaning its fore legs together and its hind legs together,] and puts them down together and raises them together.

Or the same as ظَبْىٌ [i.e. a gazelle of any age]: M in article ظبى, for الظَّبْىُ is there explained as meaning الغَزَالُ, though this seems a loose rendering.

The female is called غَزَالَةٌ, though it seems from what is said in the K that الغَزَالُ is applied only to the male, and that the female is called only ظَبْيَةٌ, as several of the lexicologists have firmly asserted.

Plural, of paucity, غِزْلَةٌ; of multitude, غِزْلانٌ.

2a certain insect, a species of the locusts, or locust-like insects, called جَنَادِب—غَزَالُ شَعْبَانَ

This last word is the plural of جُنْدَبٌ.

3a certain plant resembling the طَرْخُون [or tarragon], which is eaten, and is biting to the tongue—دَمُ الغَزَالِ

It is green, with a red root like the roots of the أَرْطَاة [ism waḥda of أَرْطًى], with the juice of which girls, or young women, make red streaks like bracelets on their arms.

AHn was told this by one or more of the Benoo-Asad.

Aboo-Nasr says it is of the kind called ذُكُور.

Or the phrases mentioned first here mean after, or a little after, the spreading of the sunshine and its entrance upon the ضُحَى; or the first part of the ضُحَى until about a fifth of the day has passed.

3a certain herb, of the kind called سُطَّاح, spreading upon the ground—الغَزَالَةُ

Aboo-Nasr: it is a pasture, and every animal eats it; the places of its growth are the plain, or soft, tracts.

Aboo-Nasr: it has green leaves and no thorns or branches; from its middle comes out a tall قَضِيب [or shoot], which is peeled and eaten, and is sweet, and it has yellow blossoms from bottom to top.

The plurals غُزَّلٌ and غَوَازِلُ are applied as adjectives to women; but the former is also applied to men, and is of a measure more usual as the plural of the masculine ism fāʿil than of the feminine.

And مَغْزَلٌ: the first of these forms is as pronounced by [the tribe of] Temeem, the second as pronounced by [that of] Keys, and the last the most rare; or the second is as pronounced by Temeem.

Fr says that مُغْزَلٌ is the original form, from أُغْزِلَ "it was made to turn round, or to revolve" [or "was twirled"]; but the Arabs found the ḍammeh hard to pronounce, and so they said مِغْزَلٌ, and in like manner مِصْحَفٌ and مِخْدَعٌ and مِجْسَدٌ and مِطْرَفٌ.

According to IAth, مِغْزَلٌ means the instrument [with which one spins]; مَغْزَلٌ the place of the غَزْل [which means the act of spinning, and the spun thread or yarn]; and مُغْزَلٌ the place in which (فِيهِ [or this may here mean upon which]) the غَزْل [i.e. spun thread or yarn] is put.

The spindle's error is that it helps to clothe mankind while it is itself naked.
