muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarغَبْنٌ غَبَنٌ
Core sense — he cheated, or defrauded, him in selling; he forgot it; he folded a garmentgenerated
1.1he was cheated, or deceived [in a purchase]—غُبِنَ
or the first is the maṣdar used of selling and the like, and the second of judgment, or opinion.
he became cheated, or endamaged, or overcome in selling and buying—انغبن
he was unmindful, or inadvertent, in selling or in buying—غَبَنَ فِى البَيْعِ
He cheated, deceived, overreached, or defrauded him in selling; he caused him loss, damage, or detriment in selling and the like, or in the price, or otherwise; or he overcame him in selling and buying.
. Perhaps غَبَنَ is here a mistranscription for غُبِنَ, which signifies this, and so the meaning would be: he was made to suffer loss.
[the man was cheated or deceived with the utmost degree of cheating]—غُبِنَ الرَّجُلُ أَشَدَّ الغَبَنَانِ
[a petty overreaching or endamaging]—غَبْنٌ يَسِيرٌ
[an exorbitant overreaching or endamaging]—غَبْنٌ فَاحِشٌ
Ibn-Buzurj gives this.
The rate of the first is one that has been estimated [as allowable by custom] by one estimator, not by everyone; the rate of the second is one that has been so estimated by no one.
[الغُبْنُ وَالغَبَنُ, mentioned by Freytag as occurring in the Fákihet el-Khulafà and explained by him as meaning “Fraus omnimoda”, should, I have no doubt, be الغَبْنُ وَالغَبَنُ, the two maṣdars mentioned above.]
1.1.1he passed by him leaning, or bending down, so that he did not see him—غَبَنَهُ
Said of passing a man: he bent down so as to elude his notice, and the other was not aware of him.
.
1.1.2
[It is said in the TA that غَيَنُوا النَّاسَ means: none but they obtained it. From this it appears that فِيهِ or the like has been omitted after النَّاسَ; with that addition the phrase may be rendered: they overreached, or prevented, the other people in respect of it, by obtaining it themselves.]
1.1.3this man attributes defect, or imperfection, to your intellect—هٰذَا يَغْبِنُ عَقْلَكَ
Said to a man whom another had cheated in a sale.
1.1.4they have not known her case, or state, or her qualities—قَدْ غَبَنُوا خَبَرَهَا
the same—غَبِنُوا
Muḍāriʿ of the first غَبُنَ, of the second غَبَنَ; the meaning is لَمْ يَعْلَمُوا عِلْمَهَا.
ISh: a phrase said of a she-camel that is all one could wish as a riding beast and in generousness of race, but is مَغْبُونَةٌ, one whose qualities are not known to be as stated.
1.1.5you have lost, and forgotten, your judgment, or opinion—غَبَنْتَ رَأْيَكَ
Possibly a mistranscription for غَبِنْتَ.
1.1.6he forgot the thing—غَبِنَ الشَّئَْ
the same—فِى الشَّئْ
.
[he made a mistake in respect of such a thing, of his right, or due, to be required from such a one]—غَبِنَ كَذَا مِنْ حَقِّهِ عِنْدَ فُلَانٍ
on this sense Or: he was unmindful, neglectful, or heedless of it, and ignorant of it; or he made a mistake in respect of it, as in this saying.
1.1.7he was, or became, deficient in his judgment, or opinion—غَبِنَ رَأْيَهُ
Maṣdar غَبَنٌ and غَبَانَةٌ.
Or: he became weak in it; or his intelligence, or sagacity, and his sharpness of mind went away.
The parsing of this phrase has been fully explained under سَفِهَ.
1.2he folded, or doubled, the garment, it being too long, and then sewed it—غَبَنَ الثَّوْبَ
from مَغْبِنٌ.
Like خَبَنَهُ and كَبَنَهُ.
he folded, or doubled, the edge of the leathern bucket, to shorten it—غَبَنَ الدَّلْوَ
Only the maṣdar of the verb used in this way is mentioned there.
1.2.1he hid, or concealed, the thing in the armpit, or groin, or the like—غَبَنَ الشَّئْ
The place meant is the مَغْبِن.
As also اغتبنهُ.
he concealed, kept, or stored, wheat, or food, for a time of dearth—غَبَنَ الطَّعَامَ
Like خَبَنَهُ.
