maṣdarعَوْلٌmuḍāriʿيَعُولُ تَعُولُ
Core sense — he fed, or sustained, his family; he had a numerous family; it overcame himgenerated
1.1I supplied him with his means of subsistence for a month—عُلْتُهُ شَهْرًا
maṣdar عَوْلٌ, عِيَالَةٌ, and عُوُولٌ.
He fed, nourished, or sustained, his family, or household, and spent on them: or he supplied them with the food, clothing and other things they needed. [In the Msb, اليَتِيمَ the orphan.]
أَعَالَهُمْ and عَيَّلَهُمْ have the same meaning.
[Begin] with those you sustain, and whose expenses are your duty—اِبْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ
In a tradition. If anything remains over and above, let it be for strangers, or those not related to you.
1.2he had a numerous family, or household—عال
Muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdar عَوْلٌ, عِيَالَةٌ, and عُوُولٌ.
اعال, أَعْوَلَ, and أَعْيَلَ have the same meaning, this last formed by changing و into ى [or formed from عِيَالٌ], and also عيل [that is, عَيَّلَ].
اعال is also explained as meaning simply: he had a family, or household.
أَعْوَلَتْ, in a tradition, meaning she brought forth children, is said by IAth to be originally أَعْيَلَتْ, meaning she had a family, or household; but Z says that اعيلت is formed with regard to the word عِيَالٌ, and is not the original form. [See also form 4 in art. عيل.]
[What ails him?] May he have a numerous family, and may he stray from the right course in his judgment—مَا لَهُ عَالَ وَمَالَ
A form of imprecation. [See another explanation in art. عيل.]
[That will be more, or most, apt, fit, or proper,] that you may not have numerous families or households—ذٰلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلَّا تَعُولُوا
In the Qur'ān 4:3.
1.2.1he (a man) was, or became, poor—عال
Muḍāriʿ as above. [And يَعِيلُ (see form 1 in art. عيل).]
اعال has the same meaning.
Yoo says that لَا يَعُولُ عَلَى القَصْدِ أَحَدٌ means لَا يَحْتَاجُ [apparently: no one will become poor, or in want, while following the right course]; and so لَا يَعِيلُ. See art. عيل.
1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredthe balance inclined, or declined, and rose—عال المِيزَانُ
Or one of its ends rose above the other: or it became defective, and departed from the right state: or it became excessive.
Muḍāriʿ يَعُولُ and يَعِيلُ; maṣdar عَوْلٌ and عَيْلٌ.
he was, or became, unfaithful; he acted unfaithfully—عال فِى المِيزَانِ
A poet says: [They said, “We have followed the way of the Apostle of God:” but they have rejected the saying of the Apostle, and been false in the balances, that is, unfaithful]
shāhidقَالُوا ٱتَّبْعْنَا رَسُولَ ٱللّٰهِ وَٱطَّرَحُواقَوْلَ الرَّسُولِ وَعَالُوا فِى المَوَازِينِ
1.3.1he (a judge) deviated from the right course, or acted wrongfully—عال
.
Construed with فِى الحُكْمِ [in the judgment].
[that you may not deviate from the right course]—أَلَّا تَعُولُوا
In the Qur'ān 4:3, mentioned above, according to Mujāhid and most of the expositors.
1.3.2the primarily-apportioned inheritance exceeded, in the reckoning, the regular sum of the fixed primary portions—عَالَتِ الفَرِيضَةُ
. This derivation is A'Obeyd's opinion.
فَرِيضَة is the primarily-apportioned inheritance; the named primary portions are all fractions of twenty-four, and when they exceed the regular sum a diminution falls on the sharers. العَوْلُ here is the opposite of الرَّدُّ [which I do not find in any lexicon, but only in dictionaries of conventional terms].
Az relates of El-Mufaddal that, when asked about the shares of two daughters, a father, a mother and a wife, he said, “Her eighth has become a ninth.” A'Obeyd says he meant that the primary portions had exceeded the regular sum, so that the wife received the ninth, whereas in the original case she would have had the eighth: for if the فريضة had not exceeded, it would have consisted of twenty-four; but when it exceeded, it became twenty-seven; the two daughters had the two thirds of twenty-four, that is sixteen portions; the father and the mother the two sixths, that is eight portions; and the wife three reckoned as of twenty-seven, that is the ninth, whereas before the exceeding it would have been three of twenty-four, that is the eighth.
This question is called المَسْأَلَةُ المِنْبَرِيَّةُ because 'Alee was asked about it while he was on the pulpit, and said, without premeditation, “Her eighth has become a ninth.”
[And the divining-arrow of Zacharias] rose upon the water—وَعَالَ قَلَمُ زَكَرِيَّآءَ
From a tradition of Maryam [the Virgin Mary], on a story alluded to in the Qur'ān 3:39.
Qur’ān 3:41 approximate — somewhere between 3:11 and 3:49 Lane cites “Kur iii. 39”
Lane cites “Bd in iv. 3” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.3.3Zeyd made the shares exceed, as described above—عال زَيْدٌ الفَرَائِضَ
Also الفَرِيضَةَ; first person عُلْتُهَا. What he so treats is the فرائض or the فريضة. أَعَالَهَا is also said, and is the more common.
1.3.4it was, or became, hard to bear, severe, or distressing, and great, or formidable—عال
Said of an affair, or event.
1.3.5may he be overcome! of what is he the overcomer?—عِيلَ مَا هُوَ عَائِلُهُ
. It (a thing) overcame a person; burdened, or oppressed, him; distressed him; and made him anxious. [See an example in a verse cited voce مَسَافَةٌ in art. سوف.]
That is, غُلِبَ مَا هُوَ غَالِبُهُ. A proverb, applied to someone at whose speech, or something else of the sort coming from him, one wonders. It has the nature of a prayer for the man, like what one says when a thing pleases one: قَاتَلَهُ ٱللّٰهُ and أَخْزَاهُ ٱللّٰهُ.
my patience was overcome—عِيلَ صَبْرِى
عَالَ صَبْرِى means the same (Abu-l-Jarrāḥ); or, according to Aboo-Ṭālib, the former may mean رُفِعَ [that is, was taken away, literally raised; and if so, the latter may likewise mean اِرْتَفَعَ].
it oppressed the wild oxen—عَالَتِ البَيْقُورَ
In a verse of Umeiyeh Ibn-Abi-s-Salt, referring to a year of drought: the oxen had سَلَع and عُشَر tied to their tails and set on fire, and were made to climb the mountain; by doing this the Arabs claimed that they obtained rain. [See art. سلع.]
1.3.6may you rise, or be raised, after stumbling, or falling—عَالَكَ عَالِيًا
So explained in the T. In it, عَالَكَ apparently means properly رَفَعَكَ, the agent being understood. It is like the saying لَعًا لَكَ عَالِيًا [in the CK لَعا لَكَ].
1.3.7may his mother be bereft of him—عِيلَ عَوْلُهُ
[Apparently meaning literally: may the wailing for him be raised.]
عَالَ عَوْلُهُ means the same.

Hence, in the Kur [iv. 3, mentioned above], أَلَّا تَعُولُوا [that ye may not deviate from the right course], (S, Mgh, O, Msb, TA,) accord. to Mujá- hid, (S, O, Msb,) and most of the expositors. (TA.) And hence, (S, Mgh, O,) in the opinion of A'Obeyd, (S, O,) عَالَتِ الفَرِيضَةُ , (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) aor. تَعُولُ , (TA,) inf. n. عَوْلٌ , (S, Mgh, O, Msb,) The فَرِيضَة [or primarily-apportioned inheritance] deviated [by excess] from the limit of the named [primary] portions [which are all fractions of four and twenty]; (Bd in iv. 3;) [meaning] it rose [above], (S, O, Msb, K,) or exceeded, (K,) in the reckoning, (Msb, K,) [the regular sum of the fixed primary portions,] i. e., its [fixed primary], portions exceeded [the regular sum thereof], occasioning a diminution to the sharers: (S, Mgh, O, Msb:) العَوْلُ in this case being the contr. of الرَّدُّ [which I do not find in any lexicon, but only in dictionaries of conventional terms]. (Msb.) Az relates, of El-Mufaddal, that, application having been made to him respecting [the shares of inheritance of] two daughters and a father and a mother and a wife, said, “ Her [the wife's] eighth has become a ninth: ” and A' Obeyd says, he meant that the [primary] portions had exceeded [the regular sum] so that there fell to the wife the ninth, whereas in the original case she would have had the eighth; for if the فريضة had not exceeded [the regular sum], it would have consisted of four and twenty; but when it [so] exceeded, it became of seven and twenty; and there pertained to the two daughters the two thirds [of four and twenty], i. e. sixteen portions; and to the father and the mother the two sixths, i. e. eight portions; and to the wife three reckoned as of seven and twenty, i. e. the ninth, whereas, before the exceeding, it would have been three of four and twenty, i. e. the eighth: and this question is called المَسْأَلَةُ المِنْبَرِيَّةُ , because 'Alee was asked respecting it when he was on the pulpit, and said, without premeditation, “ Her eighth has become a ninth. ” (TA.) Hence the saying, in a trad. of Maryam, [i. e. the Virgin Mary, respecting a story to which allusion is made in the Kur iii. 39, (see a note on that verse in Sale's Translation,)] وَعَالَ قَلَمُ زَكَرِيَّآءَ i. e. (TA.) And عِيلَ صَبْرِى My patience was overcome; (S, O, K;) and so عَالَ صَبْرِى : (Abu-l-Jarráh, Lh, K:) or, accord. to Aboo- Tálib, the former may mean رُفِعَ [i. e., was taken away, lit. raised; and if so, the latter may in like manner mean اِرْتَفَعَ ]. (TA.) عَالَتِ البَيْقُورَ , occurring in a verse of Umeiyeh Ibn-Abi-s-Salt, refers to a year of drought, and means It oppressed the [wild] oxen, by occasioning their having سَلَع and عُشَر tied to their tails and set on fire, and being made to ascend upon the mountain; by the doing of which, the Arabs asserted that they obtained rain. (S, O. [See art. سلع .]) عَالَكَ عَالِيًا [in which عَالَكَ app. signifies properly رَفَعَكَ , the agent ( ٱللّٰهُ ) being understood,] is like the saying لَعًا لَكَ عَالِيًا , (K, TA, [in the CK لَعا لَكَ ,]) and is expl. in the T as meaning Mayest thou rise, or be raised, after stumbling, or falling. (TA.) عِيلَ عَوْلُهُ [app. signifying lit. May the wailing for him be raised (in the CK عَوْلَةً )] means may his mother be bereft of him; as also عَالَ عَوْلُهُ . (K, TA.)
