Wool, (AO, S, K, TA,) in a general sense: (TA:) or wool dyed of various colours; (K, TA;) and it has been expl. as having this meaning in the Kur ci. 4: Er-Rághib says, it is peculiarly applied to coloured wool; referring to the Kur lv. 37: (TA:) and عِهْنَةٌ signifies a portion [or flock or tuft] thereof: the pl. of عِهْنٌ is عُهُونٌ [meaning sorts of عِهْن ]. So in the dialect of El-Hijáz; the people of Nejd call them الخَوَافِى.

Or, according to Lh, the branches below, or other than, the قِلَبَة, in the dialect of El-Medeeneh; one of them is called عَاهِنٌ and عَاهِنَةٌ.

Or, according to IAth, it is the plural of عَاهِنَةٌ, and means the branches next to the heart of the palm-tree.

The heart is injured by the cutting of those that are near to it; so 'Omar, as is related in a tradition, when ordering a man to bring him a palm-branch stripped of its leaves, told him to avoid [cutting] the عواهن.

According to IAth, العَوَاهِنُ means one's taking what is not the right way in journeying or in speech, and is the plural of عَاهِنَةٌ.
