Core sense — an injunction, a charge; a compact, a covenant; an oath; a timegenerated
1figurative · مجازit is in the charge prescribed as obligatory on me [that I should not take anything from a suckling]—عَهْدِى أَنْ لَا آخُذَ مِنْ رَاضِعٍ شَيْئًا
[A maṣdar of form 1, used as a simple noun:] an injunction, a charge, an order, or a command. [The plural in this and the other senses is عُهُودٌ.]
Occurring in a tradition; the phrase is figuratively abridged.
1.1the successor to a Khaleefeh, or King, by virtue of a covenant—وَلِىُّ عَهْدٍ
A compact, contract, covenant, agreement, confederacy, league, treaty, engagement, bond, obligation, or promise. Plural عُهُودٌ. According to AHeyth, عَهْدَةٌ has this meaning and عَهْدٌ is its plural [or rather a collective noun].
[the succession by virtue of a covenant]—وِلَايَةُ عَهْدٍ
1.2a free non-Muslim subject of a Muslim government—ذُو عَهْدٍ
Protection, or safeguard; a promise, or assurance, of security or safety; responsibility, or suretiship. The same as أَمَانٌ, ذِمَّةٌ and ضَمَانٌ, and so are عُهَّيْدَى [in the O عُهَيْدَى] and عِهْدَانٌ [this last is said in the S and O to mean the same as عَهْدٌ, though in what sense is not stated there].
A name given to a Christian, a Jew, [and a Sabian, who is a subject of a Muslim government,] meaning one between whom and the Muslims a compact, or covenant, subsists, whereby the Muslims are responsible for his security [and freedom and toleration] as long as he acts in accordance with the compact [by living peaceably with them and paying a poll-tax].
مُعَاهِدٌ and مُعَاهَدٌ are used in the same way, the active and the passive forms both being applied to such a person because the compact is mutual; both mean the same as ذِمِّىٌّ. People of this description are called collectively أَهْلُ العَهْدِ.
1.3[the oath by attestation of God is binding on me that I will certainly do such a thing]—عَلَىَّ عَهْدُ ٱللّٰهِ لَأَفْعَلَنَّ كَذَا
An oath. Plural عُهُودٌ. According to AHeyth, عَهْدَةٌ means an oath by which one secures himself against the person with whom he makes a compact, covenant, or the like, and عَهْدٌ is its plural [or rather a collective noun]. But it is generally used as a singular.
1.4
A writ, or diploma, of appointment to the office of a prefect, governor, or the like. Plural عُهُودٌ.
1.5
Defence of those persons or things that should be sacred or inviolable, or that are entitled to reverence, respect, or honour; and mindfulness, regard, or observance, of such things, or of love or affection.
It occurs in this sense in a tradition, in which generosity in it is said to be a point of religion.
1.6
Fulfilment of a promise or the like. So in the Qur'ān 7:100.
Qur’ān 7:102 approximate — somewhere between 7:88 and 7:139 Lane cites “Kur vii. 100”
Qur’ān 7:102 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
وَمَا وَجَدْنَا لِأَكْثَرِهِم مِّنْ عَهْدٍ ۖ وَإِن وَجَدْنَآ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَفَـٰسِقِينَMost of them We found not men (true) to their covenant: but most of them We found rebellious and disobedient.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.7[except one who has made a covenant with the Compassionate to assert his unity]—إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِنْدَ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ عَهْدًا
In the Qur'ān 19:90.
I am keeping to my covenant and promise to You, to believe in You and to assert your unity constantly [as far as I am able]—أَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُ
From a tradition relating to prayer.
on this sense The assertion of the unity of God.
2it was in the time of such a one—كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ فُلَانٍ
Also a time; and so is عِهْدَانٌ.
عِهْدَانِهِ means the same.
that was in the time of my youth, or young manhood—كَانَ ذٰلِكَ فِى عَهْدِ شَبَابِى
[over which a long time has passed]—أَتَى عَلَيْهَا عَهْدٌ طَوِيلٌ
So in the S, explaining قَرْيَةٌ عَهِيدَةٌ as meaning قَدِيمَةٌ.
2.1my meeting with him, or it, was a short time ago—عَهْدِى بِهِ قَرِيبٌ
he knew such a thing, and was in such a state, recently—هُوَ قَرِيبُ العَهْدِ بَكَذَا
So in the Msb. [And in the same way one says حَدِيثُ العَهْدِ and حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ.]
I met, or knew, or saw, him, or it, in such a place, and in such a state—عَهْدِى بِهِ بِمَوْضِعِ كَذَا
فِى حَالِ كَذَا means the same.
[I do not have any knowledge of, or acquaintance with, him, or it]—مَا لِى عَهْدٌ بِهِ
when did you meet, or see, such a one?—مَتَى عَهْدُكَ بِفُلَانٍ
when did you wear the boots?—مَتَى عَهْدُكَ بِالخُفِّ
[when did you see the lower part of your mouth?]—مَتَى عَهْدُكَ بِأَسْفَلِ فِيكَ
A proverb, said when asking someone about an old matter of which he has no knowledge.
By Aboo-Khirásh El-Hudhalee. It is explained as meaning: the case is not as you knew it, but El-Islám has come and has overturned that case.
[Hence لِلْعَهْدِ and لِلْمَعْهُودِ, said of the article اَلْ, meaning: used to mark a noun as known to the hearer, or reader, in a particular sense.]
[And it is not like the formerly known state of the abode, O Umm-Málik; but chains have surrounded the necks]
shāhidفَلَيْسَ كَعَهْدِ الدَّارِ يَا أُمَّ مَالِكٍوَلٰكِنْ أَحَاطَتْ بِالرِّقَابِ السَّلَاسِلُ
3
Also a first rain, the rain immediately following it being called وَلْىٌ; or the first of the rain called الوَسْمِىُّ. عَهْدَةٌ, عِهْدَةٌ and عِهَادَةٌ mean the same — or, as in some copies of the K [and in the CK], عِهَادٌ, which is the plural of عَهْدٌ.
3.1[a continuous and still rain fell on us after a continuous and still rain following on عهاد, not long before]—أَصَابَتْنَا دِيمَةٌ بِعْدَ دِيمَةٍ عَلَى عِهَادٍ غَيْرِ قَدِيمَةٍ
And: rain that falls after other rain, while the moisture of the first still remains; as also عَهْدَةٌ and عِهْدَةٌ, plural عِهَادٌ and عُهُودٌ.
Or عِهَادٌ, according to some, means recent rains; apparently from the saying:
Or عِهَادٌ means the rains of the season called رَبِيع [autumn here, as is shown under نَوْءٌ], after the rain called الوَسْمِىّ; or weak, fine rain, of the kind called وَسْمِىّ.
3.2the year of few rains—عَامُ العُهُودِ
