muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarعَنَتٌ

Core sense — he fell into difficulty or distress; it broke after being set; he sinnedgenerated

1.1he fell into a difficult, hard, or distressing caseعَنَتٌ

.

meeting with difficulty, hardship, or distressعَنَتٌ

Some hold this to be the primary meaning: see عَنَتْ below; the explanations there seem to show that the verb has several meanings not expressly assigned to it in the lexicons.

grievous to him is your experiencing difficulty, hardship, or distressعَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ

In the Qur'ān 9, last verse but one; so Az and most of the commentators.

Or, as some say, the meaning is مَا أَعْنَتَكُمْ, that is, what has brought you into difficulty, hardship, or distress.

In the S and O the context seems to indicate that مَا عَنِتُّمْ means your having sinned.

1.1.1the beast limped, or halted, from hard or rough treatment it could not bearعَنِتَتِ الدَّابَّةُ
he shod his beast and it became lameأَنْعَلَ دَابَّتَهُ فَعَنِتَتْ

From a tradition; so some relate it. Others relate it as فَعَتَبَتْ, but Kt prefers the first reading.

1.1.2it broke after having been set and unitedعَنِتَ

Also, said of a bone: it became weak, and broke.

it broke after having been set and unitedعَنِتَتْ

The first is said of a bone, the second of an arm or a leg..

on this sense The Ksh and Bd, at 4:30, say this is the primary meaning.

1.1.3he committed a sin, a crime, or an act of disobedience deserving punishmentعَنِتَ

.

Or he committed sins, crimes, or acts of disobedience deserving punishment; or he did wrong, intentionally or unintentionally.

[And particularly He committed fornication, or adultery: see عَنَتٌ below.]
