Make trial of orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if then ye find sound judgment in them, release their property to them; but consume it not wastefully, nor in haste against their growing up. If the guardian is well-off, Let him claim no remuneration, but if he is poor, let him have for himself what is just and reasonable. The thing abstained from may also be: what is not lawful, nor comely or decorous; things that should be sacred or inviolable; base, or carnal, objects of inordinate desire; or simply a thing.

[And very often used as meaning abstinent, continent, chaste, virtuous, modest, decent, or decorous.]

The feminine of the former is formed with ة, and so is that of the latter, which has no broken plural. The masculine plural of عَفِيفٌ is أَعِفَّآءُ and أَعِفَّةٌ.

Nounعُفَافَةٌ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — milk that has collected in the udder; milk left after most is suckedgenerated

1

IDrd: it is the noun from عَفَّ said of milk. [According to him it appears to mean milk that has collected in the udder.]

According to another or others, and so also عُفَّةٌ: some milk remaining in the udder after most of it has been sucked.

1.1

F explains العُفَافَةُ, with ḍamm, by the words أَنْ تَأْخُذَ الشَّىْءِ بَعْدَ الشَّىْءِ فَأَنْتَ تَعْتَفُّهُ [as though it signified the taking of thing after thing, by licking it up or otherwise, from the ground, choosing the best of it].

But this way of explaining is often used in dictionaries to denote the thing, or things, mentioned, not the act; and I think that what is meant here is the thing, or things, so taken. This also agrees with the general analogy of words of the measure فُعَالَةٌ, as many examples in the Mz, 40th نوع, show.

Show Lane's original text
