muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarعِظَمٌ عَظْمٌ عَظَمَةٌ
Core sense — he was, or became, great; he gave the dog a bone; he struck his bonesgenerated
1.1it was, or became, great, big, or large, in length, breadth, and thickness—كَبُرَ
maṣdar عِظَمٌ and عَظَامَةٌ. According to El-Isbahánee, the first meaning is: he was, or became, great in his bone.
Then used figuratively of anything كَبِير [or great], whether an object of sense or of intellect, a substance or an accident.
[Said figuratively of an object of the intellect, it means it was, or became, great in estimation, rank, or dignity, and so also of a man; or it says more than كَبُرَ, meaning it was, or became, great in comparison with other things of its kind, huge, enormous, or vast; in a similar sense of a man, and in an incomparably higher sense of God: see عَظِيمٌ below.]
it became great, or momentous—اعظم
Said of an affair, or event, like عَظُمَ: it became عَظِيم.
greatness—عِظَمٌ
The opposite of صِغَرٌ.
1.1.1
عَظُمَ عِنْدَهُ and عَظُمَ عَلَيْهِ: see form 6, in three places; and see also form 4.
And مَا يَعْظُمُنِى [which is close in meaning to ما يَعْظُمُ عَلَىَّ, if it is not a miswriting for ما يُعْظِمُنِى]: see form 4.
1.1.2how great is the belly, your belly!—عُظْمَ البَطْنُ بَطْنُكَ
Said in expressing wonder: عَظُمَ is contracted, and the vowel of its middle letter is moved to the place of its first.
The same is done with what denotes praise or blame, and with any verb that may properly be used in the manner of نِعْمَ and بِئْسَ. A verb that may not be so used does not admit the transfer, though it may be contracted; so you may say حَسُنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ, حَسْنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ, and حُسْنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ, but not قَدْ حُسْنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ.
1.2he gave the dog a bone to eat—عَظَمَ الكَلْبَ
.
اعظمهُ means the same.
1.2.1he struck such a one upon his bones—عَظَمَ فُلَانًا
Maṣdar عَظَمَةٌ and عَظَمٌ.

(TA.) عِظَمٌ is the contr. of صِغَرٌ . (K.) عَظُمَ عِنْدَهُ , and عَظُمَ عَلَيْهِ : see 6, in three places: and see also 4. And مَا يَعْظُمُنِى [which is similar in meaning to ما يَعْظُمُ عَلَىَّ if not a mistranscription for ما يُعْظِمُنِى ]: see 4. In the case of expressing wonder, one says, عُظْمَ البَطْنُ بَطْنُكَ [How great is the belly, thy belly !], contracting عَظُمَ , and transferring the vowel of its middle letter to [the place of] its first; and thus one does in the case of that which denotes praise or blame, and of whatever [verb] may be well used in the manner of نِعْمَ , and بِئْسَ : but what may not be thus used does not admit of the transferring, though it may be contracted; so that you may say, حَسُنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ and حَسْنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ and حُسْنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ , but not قَدْ حُسْنَ الوَجْهُ وَجْهُكَ .
