muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarعَطَلٌ

Core sense — she had no ornaments on her; he became destitute; he was without occupationgenerated

1.1

[In my copy of the Msb it is said to be of the class of قتل, perhaps a miswriting for قَبِلَ; but see what is said below of عَطَلَ as synonymous with بَطَلَ, from which one may infer that عَطَلَتْ is correct in the sense that follows, as well as عَطِلَتْ.]

Said of a woman: she had no women's ornaments on her, and wore no decoration; or her neck was bare of necklaces or the like.; maṣdar عَطَلٌ, عُطُولٌ, and تعطّلت. Also استعطلت.

Er-Rāghib: العَطَلُ means being without ornament or decoration.

1.1.1he (a man) became destitute [of property]عَطِلَ مِنَ المَالِ

العَطَلُ is sometimes used [for العَطَلُ مِنْ شَىْءِ] meaning being destitute of a thing, though it relates primarily to women's ornaments.

[destitute of discipline, or of good qualities and attributes of the mind, etc.]مِنَ الأَدَبِ
1.1.2the hired man was without occupationعَطَلَ الأَجِيرُ

Er-Rāghib: it also means being without occupation.

like بَطَلَ, in measure and in meaning; though it seems that in this sense too, by general usage, the verb is عَطِلَ.

the camels were without a pastor to tend themعطلت الإِبِلُ

The context there seems to show that the verb here also has fatḥ on the ط, but I believe عَطِلَت to be more correct.

1.1.3he became large in the bodyعَطِلَ

With kesr [to the ط], that is, like فَرِحَ.

Core sense — one who denies that the universe has a makergenerated

1

Er-Rāghib: one who asserts that the universe has no maker who constructed it skilfully and adorned it.

Esh-Shahristánee: but the مُعَطِّلَة of the Arabs were of different sorts. One sort of them denied the Creator, and the raising and restoring to life, and asserted that nature is what brings to life and time is what brings to nothing. Another sort acknowledged the Creator, and the beginning of creation, but denied the raising and restoring to life. And another sort acknowledged the Creator, the beginning of creation, and a mode of restoration to life, but denied the apostles, worshipped idols, asserted them to be their intercessors with God in the life to come, made pilgrimage to them, sacrificed victims to them, offered offerings, sought to advance themselves in their favour by religious rites and ceremonies, and made some things lawful and others forbidden; and these were most of the Arabs, except a small portion of them.
