1.1he, or it, inclined towards him, or it—انعطف نَحْوَهُ

. Said of a man, or of a thing: he, or it, inclined, or bent.

انعطف also has this meaning of inclining, as in this phrase; or it means it became inclined, or bent, or both, as quasi-passive of عَطَفَهُ.

تعطّف likewise has both of these meanings, as quasi-passive of عطّفهُ; or it means it became much inclined and bent, since عطّف has teshdeed to denote muchness.

Maṣdar عَطْفٌ and تعطّف عليه and انعطف عليه. So called because in mercy, pity, or compassion there is an inclining towards its object; the same in meaning as أَشْفَقَ عَلَيْهِ and وَصَلَهُ and بَرَّهُ.

she became favourably inclined towards her young one, and yielded her milk—عَطَفَتْ عَلَى وَلَدِهَا

Said of a she-camel. تعطّفت عَلَيْهِ means the same, or she was made to incline to him, or to affect him. See also the article on رأم and others.

1.1.2he turned, or returned, against him—عَطَفَ عَلَيْهِ

Or he charged, or made an assault or attack, upon him in battle, and turned back against him. Or he returned against him with what he disliked, and to him with what he desired.

This is the opposite of عَطَفَ عَلَيْهِ in the first of the senses given to it above.

عَطْفٌ has the same meaning; both as intransitive maṣdars.

استعطفهُ likewise has this meaning.

عطّفهُ, maṣdar تَعْطِيفٌ, has both of these meanings; or it has teshdeed to denote muchness of the action, or multiplicity of the objects.

I bent, or inclined, the stick, or piece of wood—عَطَفْتُ العُودَ

(TA.) And عَطَفَتْكَ عَلَيْهِمُ الرَّحِمُ [The feeling of relationship, or consanguinity, or the sympathy of blood, caused, or hath caused, thee to be favourably inclined towards them; &c.]. (Ham p. 765.) And عَطَفَ النَّاقَةَ عَلَى وَلَدِهَا [He made the she-camel to incline to, or affect, her young one]. (M in art. رأم ; &c.: see also لِقَاحٌ مُعَطَّفَةٌ in this art.) And تُعْطَفُ عَلَى البَوِّ [She (a camel) is made to incline to, or affect, the stuffed skin of a young unweaned camel in order that she may yield her milk, when her young one has died]. The side of a human being, from the head to the hip, or to the foot; and the side of a thing. Or the dual means the two sides of a man, from the part next the head to the hips; also the two sides of a man's neck; and the two sides of anything, whether a man or a thing.

The plural is أَعْطَافٌ, properly a plural of paucity, and, of a man, also عِطَافٌ and عُطُوفٌ.

Properly meaning flexible, supple, lithe, or limber; but apparently used here figuratively, as meaning compliant: compare لَيِّنُ الجَانِبِ.

pliant, or pliable—لَيِّنُ الأَعْطَافِ

Applied to a horse; from En-Nadr, under the word غُوْجٌ. See also عَاجٌ in the article on عوج.

سَهْلُ المَعْطِفِ and المَعَاطِفِ and الأَعْطَافِ mean the same, likewise applied to a horse; under the word غَوْجٌ.

he turned away from me—ثَنَى عَنِّى عِطْفَهُ

Literally, he bent his side away from me.

he came in an easy, or a pleasant and plentiful, state or condition—جَآءَ ثَانِىَ عِطْفِهِ
twisting, or bending, his neck—ثَانِىَ عِطْفِهِ

In the Qur'ān 22:9. Or it means magnifying himself, behaving proudly, and turning away from El-Islám.

such a one looks at his sides—فُلَانٌ يَنْظُرُ فِى عِطْفَيْهِ

Meaning he is self-conceited.

Also a man's armpit; and his shoulder. Plural عُطُوفٌ.

Also the curved part of each of the two extremities of a bow; the two are called its عِطْفَانِ.

The copies of the K have تَعَرَّجَ الفَرَسُ فِى عِطْفَيْهِ, but the first reading is the right one.

1.3go aside from the beaten track of the road—تَنَحَّ عَنْ عِطْفِ الطَّرِيقِ

عَطْفِهِ is used in the same way.

Or عَطْفٌ means a bending in a street or road, a maṣdar used as a simple noun; but the عِطْف in a street or road is a bent part, of the measure فِعْلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ.

(Disdainfully) bending his side, in order to lead (men) astray from the Path of Allah: for him there is disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Judgment We shall make him taste the Penalty of burning (Fire).

IB says that the عَطْفَة is the لَبْلَاب, the dolichos lablab of Linnaeus, so called because it twines upon trees.

This word and مِعْطَفٌ denote a garment of either of the kinds called a رِدَآء or a طَيْلَسَان, and any garment that is worn as the رِدَآء is worn.
