It means dividing a thing into parts, or portions; and distributing. عَضْوٌ has both of these senses too.

Also الذَّبِيحَةَ. [It means limbs, or members, and the like; I limbed it, or dismembered it.]

That is, what cannot be divided, such as a bead of precious stone and the like, shall not be distributed, even if one or more of the inheritors demand its division, because that would injure them or some of them; instead it shall be sold, and its price divided among them.

signifies The act of dividing [a thing] into parts, or portions: and the act of distributing: as also عَضْوٌ [in both of these senses]. (K, TA.) In this sense, as the singular of the last word in the saying in the Kur-án [15:91], ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا ٱلْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ, its missing radical letter is و or ه, as has been mentioned in art. عضه.

Those who say that it is و take as evidence its having the plural عِضَوَاتٌ, and those who say that it is ه take as evidence their saying عَضِيهَةٌ.

A piece, part, or portion, (Msb, K,) of a thing: originally عِضْوَةٌ : pl. عِضُونَ , irreg., like سِنُونَ . (Msb.)
