Mentioned in the Mgh as a maṣdar, but said in the Msb to be a simple noun. It primarily means مَنْعٌ [prevention, or hindrance; or, as most of its subordinate uses seem to show, defence, or protection].

Or, some say, its primary meaning is the act of tying, or binding, and from this comes the meaning of مَنْعٌ. Zj: it primarily means حَبْلٌ [that is, a rope, or cord]. Mohammad Ibn-Neshwán El-Himyeree: سَبَبٌ and حَبْلٌ [which mean the same].

Defence, or protection, or preservation, [in an absolute sense, and] as an act of God, from what would cause a man's destruction.

Core sense — the tie of a water-skin; a carrying-strap; collyriumgenerated

1

The tie of a قِرْبَة [or water-skin], that is, its [tie called] وَكَآء; and the strap used for carrying it; or a cord used for tying the leathern bucket, the water-skin, and the leathern water-vessel called إِدَاوَة; and the loop-shaped handle by which the bag or other receptacle for travelling-provisions or goods called وِعَآء is suspended; and anything that serves for the protection, or preservation, of a thing.

Plural [of pauc.] أَعْصِمَةٌ and [of mult.] عُصْمٌ; or عُصُمٌ and عِصَامٌ, like the singular, of the class of دِلَاصٌ.

Az states, as what had been heard from the Arabs about the عُصْم of the leathern water-bags called مَزَاد, that they are the cords fixed in the loops of the pairs of water-bags, with which they are tied when they are bound on the camel's back; the [rope called] رِوَآء is then bound over them. Lth wrongly says that they are the طَرَائِق [apparently meaning borders] of the extremity of the مَزَادَة [or leathern water-bag], at the place of the كُلْيَة [or kidney-shaped piece of leather to which a loop is sewed]. [See also خُصْمٌ.]

A tradition mentions a place where a camel was shackled with عُصْم, meaning that its abundance of herbage confined him so that he would not go away in search of pasture.

Also the cord, or bond, of the vehicle called مَحْمِل, which is bound at the extremity of each of the transverse pieces of wood called the عَارِضَانِ [correctly عَارِضَتَانِ], in the upper part of each of these.

A relative noun used as meaning of the class of 'Isám, and so self-ennobled.

عِصَامٌ is the name of a chamberlain of En-Noamán Ibn-El-Mundhir; the saying below is a proverb spoken in relation to him.

The latter clause means: and do not be one of those who glory in old and wasted and crumbling bones, [that is, in their ancestors.]

This alludes to his saying — so in the S and K and TA, but it is really the saying of En-Nábighah: [The soul of 'Isám ennobled 'Isám, and taught him the art of attack, and boldness]

Core sense — having a whiteness in the fore legs; said of a gazelle, goat, horse, or crowgenerated

1

A gazelle, or a mountain-goat, with a whiteness in his arms, or in one of them, the rest of him being red or black; or a goat white in the fore legs, or in one fore leg.

Feminine عَصْمَآءُ; plural عُصْمٌ.

1.1

And a horse white in the fore leg; or with a whiteness in one of his fore legs, above the pastern; or with a whiteness in his fore shanks; or with a whiteness in one of his fore legs but none at all, little or much, in his hind legs — in which case he is called أَعْصَمُ اليُمْنَى or اليُسْرَى [white in respect of the right fore leg or of the left].

When the whiteness is in both fore legs, he is called أَعْصَمُ اليَدَيْنِ [white in respect of the two fore legs], unless he has a blaze on his face, in which case he is called مُحَجَّلٌ, not أَعْصَمُ; though a blaze on his face does not cause him to be called مُحَجَّلٌ when the whiteness is in one fore leg.

1.2

And a crow with a white feather in its wing (S, K; [in some copies of the K, in its two wings]), that is, in one of its wings, because the bird's wing corresponds to the fore leg [of the beast]; or white in the wings; or white in the legs; or red in the legs and beak.

Az says this last is the correct explanation, but adds that the Arabs call whiteness حَمْرَة [which properly means redness], saying of a woman of white complexion that she is حَمْرَآء [so that the last of these explanations of أَعْصَمُ applied to a crow apparently means white in the legs and beak].

The Prophet is said to have explained this adjective, so applied, as meaning one of whose legs is white.

Some say that الغُرَابُ الأَعْصَمُ is like الأَبْلَقُ العَقُوقُ and بَيْضُ الأَنوقِ, applied to anything that is rarely found. It occurs in a number of traditions, and a righteous woman is likened to it.
