muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarعَسْلٌ عَسَلٌ حَلَبٌ عَسَلَانٌ
Core sense — he prepared the food with honey; it quivered; he ran with wide stepsgenerated
1.1he mixed the food with honey, and made it pleasant and sweet—عسّلهُ
he made, or prepared, the food with عَسَل [i. e. honey].
Maṣdar تَعْسِيلٌ.
1.1.1figurative · مجازhe made him an object of praise—عَسَلَهُ
Also: He (i. e. God) made him an object of love to men.
According to the Prophet's own explanation of a saying of his in which it occurs: He (i. e. God) granted him, or disposed him, to do a good deed before his death, so that those around him were pleased with him and praised him; the good deed being likened to honey.
1.1.2
And: he fed him with honey. See also form 2.
1.1.3the extracting of honey from a bee-hive—عَسْلٌ
1.1.4figurative · مجازhe had sexual intercourse with the woman—عَسَلَ المَرْأَةَ
.
In this sense the verb may be derived from a phrase mentioned under عُسَيْلَةٌ, or it may be a word coined independently. ISd says: “In my opinion it is derived.”
1.1.5he tasted his food—عَسَلَ مِنْ طَعَامِهِ
[in form] like حَلَبَ.
1.2it quivered, or quivered much—عَسَلَ
Said of a spear. [correctly عَسَلٌ] and عُسُولٌ.
In the CK, عَسْلًا and عَسْلانًا are put for عَسَلًا and عَسَلَانًا.
1.2.1it became agitated and rippled, stirred up by the wind—عَسَلَ
Said of water., both with fet-ḥ to the س; but the former in the CK has the س sākin.
1.2.2he went with wide steps and quickly—عَسَلَ
Said of a wolf, of a horse, or of a fox., but both in the CK with the س sākin. The pace is that termed عَنَق or خَبَب [i. e. with wide steps].
Said in the same way of a man.
Or: he was agitated in his running, and shook his head, going along quickly.
Er-Rāghib: عَسَلَانٌ signifies the shaking of the limbs in running, and is mostly used of the wolf.
Some say that عَسَلُ الفَرَسِ and عَسَلَانُهُ mean the horse's being violent, or ardent, in his running, bending down his head, with his back even.
عَسَلَ الطَّرِيقَ, said of a fox, occurs in a verse of Sá'ideh Ibn-Ju-eiyeh, for عَسَلَ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ [apparently a mistranscription for عسل فِى الطريق], like the phrase دَخَلْتُ البَيْتَ [for دخلت فِى البَيْتِ].
he went quickly, or with wide steps, like the wolf—عَسَلَ بِٱلْمَفَازَةِ
Said of a guide; also فِى الطَّرِيقِ. [In the desert, or waterless desert, or in the way.]
keep to going along quickly—كَذَبَ عَلَيْكَ العَسَلُ
Occurs in a tradition; also العَسَلَ. From العَسَلَانُ, which means the going along of the wolf and the quivering of the spear; or, as some say, العَسَلُ here means عَسَلُ النَّحْلِ [the honey of bees]. See also art. كذب.
1.3he kept, or clung, to the thing—عَسِلَ بِالشَّىْءِ
With kesr [to the س], like عَلِمَ or عَسَلَ بالشّىء (so in two copies of the S, and omitted in one of my copies). with fet-ḥ to the س, or عُسُولٌ and عَسْلٌ.
