Form 1عَزَلَهُ4 senses · 2 main
muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarعَزْلٌ عَزَلٌ

Core sense — he set it apart, he removed it; he deposed him from his officegenerated

1.1he put a thing apart, or aside; he removed it, or separated it, [from another thing, or from other things]عَنْ غَيْرِهِ

.

1.1.1he removed, or deposed, him [from the agency, or administration, or government]عَزَلَهُ عَنِ العَمَلِ
he removed, or deposed, himعزّلهُ

And hence, said of an agent or a deputy: he removed him from his office.

Maṣdar تَعْزِيلٌ; it means the same as عَزَلَهُ.

[اعزل is said by Freytag to mean Semovit, followed by عن, on the authority of the K; I do not find it there.]

he was, or became, removed, deposed, or displaced [from his office]عُزِلَ

Used as quasi-passive of عَزَلَهُ; in this sense انعزل is [said to be] not used, because in it [i.e. عَزَلَهُ] no labour or exertion is implied.

1.1.2he withdrew shortly before emission, so that the seed fell outsideعَزَلَ

Said of the مُجَامِع.

he did not desire her [having] offspringعَزَلَ عَنْهَا

The pronoun refers to the man's female slave. [Vaguely explained.]

he did not desire her [having] offspringاِعْتَزَلَهَا

The motive is that the woman might not conceive.

1.2he (a horse) had his tail inclining to one side, by habit, not naturallyعَزِلَ

.

When it inclines to the right side, the Arabs count it unlucky.

Nounعَزْلَآءُ3 senses · 1 main

Core sense — the lower mouth, or spout, of a leathern water-bag; the anusgenerated

1

[Originally the feminine of أَعْزَلُ; a noun signifying] the lower mouth, or spout, or outlet, of the leathern water-bag called مَزَادَة: the part where the water pours out from the رَاوِيَة [a word used here, as in many other places, as synonymous with مَزَادَة] and the like of it, such as the قِرْبَة in the bottom of it, where the water it holds is drawn out.

Kh says that every مزادة has عَزْلَاوَانِ [dual of عَزْلَآءُ] in its bottom.

But it is said in the M that the عزلآء is so called because it is in one of the خُصْمَان [meaning the two lower corners] of the مزادة, not in its middle; nor is it like its mouth, in which it receives the water.

[The mouth by which this kind of water-bag is filled is in the middle of the upper edge; and the عزلآء, in every instance I remember seeing, is in the hinder of the two lower corners, and is tied round with a thong: see مَزَادَةٌ in art. زيد.]

The plural is عَزَالٍ, written with the article العَزَالِى, and in the K [improperly] عَزَالِى, without the article; عَزَالَى is also allowable; and العَزَائِلُ occurs in a tradition for العَزَالِى, these two words being like الشَّائِكُ and الشَّاكِى.

1.1figurative · مجازit loosed its spoutsأَرْخَتْ عَزَالِيَهَا

[The south wind drew them forth; and when they became black and dense and heaped up, the north wind loosed their spouts, that is, made the rain pour forth.]

Said of a cloud when it discharges its pouring rain, or pours forth copious rain.

it has loosed its spoutsقَدْ حَلَّتْ عَزَالِيَهَا
it loosed its spoutsأَرْسَلَتْ عَزَالِيَهَا

Said also of the sky, to indicate the violent falling of the rain, which is likened to its descent from the spouts of the مَزَادَة [or rather of the مَزَاد or مَزَايِد].

1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredthe anusالعَزْلَآءُ

Explained as the اِسْت: it is so called as being an outlet, and as being closed by a sphincter, just as the عزلآء properly so called is closed by a thong tied round it.

Show Lane's original text

(TA.) [Hence,] El-Kumeyt says, [describing clouds ( سَحَاب ),] 1 [The south wind drew them forth; and when they became black and dense and accumulated, the north wind loosed their spouts; i. e. caused the rain to pour forth]. Nounأَعْزَلُ7 senses · 1 main

Core sense — having no weapon; separated from others; a horse whose tail leans to one sidegenerated

1sand separate, or cut off, from other sandsرَمْل
1.1

Also a man not having any weapon with him; and so عُزُلٌ, which occurs in a tradition, and مِعْزَالٌ — though this last is said to mean not having a spear with him, and the first is sometimes explained as having that particular meaning.

The plural of the first, and of عُزُلٌ, is عُزْلٌ, عُزْلَانٌ, and عُزَّلٌ, which is irregular but made to accord with حُسَّرٌ, plural of the adjective حَاسِرٌ, because it is close to it in meaning; also أَعْزَالٌ, or this is the plural of عُزُلٌ; and مَعَازِيلُ, which is irregular, and this is the plural of مِعْزَالٌ as well.

Hence the adjective الأَعْزَلُ is applied to one of the سِمَاكَانِ, that is, to one of the two stars each of which is called السِّمَاكُ; because, unlike [the other سماك, that is,] الرَّامِحُ, it has no star before it that is regarded as its weapon; or because in the days of its rising there is no cold and no wind.

1.2

Also a bird that cannot fly.

1.3clouds in which there is no rainسَحَاب
1.4I seek protection by God from a man having no weapon with him, on a horse whose tail is crookedأَعُوذُ بِٱللّٰهِ مِنَ الأَعْزَلِ عَلَى الأَعْزَلِ

Also a horse having his tail inclining to one side, by habit, not naturally. [See عَزِلَ.]

The عَسِيب is the bone of the tail, or the part of the tail where the hair grows.

1.5

Apparently as an adjective applied to an ass or the like: deficient in one of the حَرْقَفَتَانِ [which seems here to mean the crest of one of the two hip-bones].

1.6

Also the share of flesh-meat belonging to an absent man.

Plural عُزْلٌ.

Show Lane's original text
Sand ( رَمْل ) separate, or cut off, (IAar, O, K,) from other sands. (IAar, O.) Also A man not having with him any weapon; (S, O, K;) as also عُزُلٌ , (O, K,) occurring in a trad.; (O;) and مِعْزَالٌ , (K,) or this signifies not having with him a spear; (S, * K;) and the first is sometimes expl. as having this particular meaning: (TA:) pl. of the first, (S, O, K,) and of عُزُلٌ , (K, TA,) عُزْلٌ and عُزْلَانٌ and عُزَّلٌ , (S, O, K,) which is anomalous, but made to accord with حُسَّرٌ , pl. of the epithet حَاسِرٌ , because nearly like it in meaning, (R, MF,) and أَعْزَالٌ , (K,) or or this is pl. of عُزُلٌ , (O, TA,) and مَعَازِيلُ , (IJ, K,) which is anomalous, (TA,) and this is pl. of مِعْزَالٌ (S, O, K) also. (K.) Hence, the epithet الأَعْزَلُ is applied to one of the سِمَاكَانِ , (S, O, K, TA,) i. e., to one of the two stars of which each is called السِّمَاكُ [q. v.]; (TA;) because, unlike [the other سماك , i. e.] الرَّامِحُ , it has no star [near] before it that is regarded as its weapon; (S, * O, * K, * TA;) or because in the days of its rising [aurorally] there is no cold nor wind. (O, K.) And A bird that cannot fly. (MF, TA.) And Clouds ( سَحَاب ) in which is no rain. (S, O, K.) And A horse having his tail inclining to one side, (S, Mgh, O, K,) by habit, (S, O, K,) not naturally. (S, O.) [See عَزِلَ .] Hence the saying, أَعُوذُ بِٱللّٰهِ مِنَ الأَعْزَلِ عَلَى الأَعْزَلِ i. e. [I seek protection by God] from a [or the] man having with him no weapon, upon a [or the] horse of which the عَسِيب [or bone of the tail, or part of the tail where the hair grows,] is crooked. (TA.) And [app. as an epithet applied to an ass or the like,] Deficient in one of the حَرْقَفَتَانِ [which seems here to mean, in the crest of one of the two hip-bones]. (IAar, O, K.) And The share, of flesh-meat, of an absent man: (IAar, O, K: *) pl. عُزْلٌ . (IAar, O.)
