muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarعِزٌّ عَزٌّ عَزْعَزَةٌ مُعَازَّةٌ
Core sense — he was mighty, powerful; it was rare; he overcame himgenerated
1.1he was, or became, mighty, potent, powerful, or strong—تعزّز
maṣdar عِزٌّ and عِزَّةٌ, or the latter is a simple noun; also عَزَازَةٌ. This is TA's explanation of عِزٌّ.
Or it means he made himself so, he strengthened himself; syn. تَقَوَّى.
he became mighty after being low, or mean, in condition—عَزَّ
he was, or became, high, or elevated, in rank, condition, or state; noble, honourable, glorious, or illustrious—عَزِرْتَ
this is the explanation of عِزٌّ. Also تعزّز in the same sense.
[عَزَّ وَجَلَّ, referring to the name of God expressed or understood, is a phrase of frequent occurrence, meaning: To Him, or to Whom, belong might and majesty, or glory and greatness.]
1.1.1I exceeded him in nobleness, or generosity—عَزَزْتُ عَلَيْهِ
that is, كَرُمْتُ عَلَيْهِ.
1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe magnified, or exalted, himself; he was disdainful, scornful, or indignant, in a blamable way—عَزَّ
[; maṣdar عِزٌّ and عِزَّةٌ, and apparently عَزَازَةٌ also.]
This is TA's explanation of عِزَّةٌ, which see below. See also form 5.
1.1.3he resisted, or withstood—عِزٌّ
he was indomitable, invincible, not to be overcome—عِزَّةٌ
the thing was, or became, impossible, insuperable, or unattainable—عَزَّ الشَّىْءُ
So TA explains it.
So B and TA explain it; see below.
. [Also: difficult, or hard; and so اِعْتَزَّ, which occurs in TA coupled with تَعَسَّرَ in an explanation of مَنُعَ in the article on منع; and تعزّز.]
Es-Sarakustee gives تعزّز.
1.1.4it was, or became, rare, scarce, hardly to be found—عَزَّ
Said of a thing, meaning anything.
maṣdar عِزٌّ, عِزَّةٌ and عَزَازَةٌ.
1.1.5
[And from this: he, or it, was, or became, dear, highly esteemed, or greatly valued.]
1.1.6your doing so distressed me, or distresses me—عَزَّ عَلَىَّ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كَذَا
the latter the more correct. [The second person of the past tense is عَزَزْتَ and عَزِزْتَ.] Synonyms: اِشْتَدَّ, حَقَّ and شَقَّ.
such a thing distressed, or afflicted, me—عَزَّ عَلَىَّ كَذَا
it distressed me to displease you—عَزَّ عَلَىَّ أَنْ أَسُوْءَكَ
it is distressing that you are going away—عَزَّ مَا أَنَّكَ ذَاهِبٌ
The phrase often, though not always, hints at disgust at the action, or anger at it.
Like حَقَّ أَنَّكَ ذَاهِبٌ [or حَقَّ مَا انّك ذاهب].
it distresses me, what you say—لَعَزَّ مَا
One says to a man, Do you love me?, and he replies with this; that is, لَشَدَّ مَا and لَحَقَّ مَا: it distresses me, or it has distressed me.
I was, or am, distressed by what has befallen you—أُعْزِزْتُ بِمَا أَصَابَكَ
that by which you have been afflicted distresses me—أَعْزِزْ عَلَىَّ بِمَا أُصِبْتَ بِهِ
Or: how it distresses me! So in a tradition of ʿAlee: when he saw Ṭalḥah slain he said أَعْزِزْ عَلَىَّ أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ أَنْ أَرَاكَ مُجَدَّلًا تَحْتَ نُجُومِ السَّمَآءِ [It distresses me, or how it distresses me! O Aboo-Moḥammad, that I see you laid low on the ground beneath the stars of heaven].
[A similar example is given in the A, without بِ prefixed to أَنْ.]
1.2he was, or became, weak—عَزَّ
So the verb has two opposite meanings.
1.3he overcame him, or conquered him—عَزَّهُ
.
he overcame him in a contest of argument—عَزْعَزَهُ
.
he became stronger than him in it, or he strove with him to overcome in it—عَزَّهُ فِى الخِطَابِ
Also عازّهُ فِيهِ.
In the Qur 38:22, some read عَزَّنِى and others عَازَّنِى.
he strove with me to overcome, and I overcame him—عَازَّنِى فَعَزَزْتُهُ
مُعَازَّةٌ means contending together in argument.
he overcame his rider, or gained the mastery over him—اعتزّ فَارِسَهُ
Said of a horse; so in the article on جمع.
he who overcomes takes the spoil—مَنْ عَزَّ بَزَّ
when your brother overcomes you, and you are not equal to him, be gentle to him—إِذَا عَزَّ أَخُوكَ فَهُنْ
A proverb.
A proverb. In it لَمْ تُقَاومْهُ means: you are not equal to him. Or: when your brother magnifies and exalts himself against you, abase yourself. Aboo-Is-ḥáḳ says that what Th gives is a mistake: the right reading is فَهِنْ, with kesreh, meaning: when your brother is hard, or severe, to you, treat him with gentleness; not فَهُنْ, with dammeh, which is from الهَوَانُ. But ISd approves and justifies Th's reading. See also form 10.
Qur’ān 38:23 approximate — somewhere between 38:6 and 38:32 Lane cites “Kur xxxviii. 22”
Lane cites “Jel in xxxviii. 22” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
Qur’ān 38:23 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
إِنَّ هَـٰذَآ أَخِى لَهُۥ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِىَ نَعْجَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ"This man is my brother: He has nine and ninety ewes, and I have (but) one: Yet he says, 'commit her to my care,' and is (moreover) harsh to me in speech."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.4
عَزَّهُ, has the same meaning as عَزَّزَهُ and أَعَزَّهُ in a sense given below: see form 2, in two places.
1.4.1
[And from this,] with the same muḍāriʿ and maṣdar: he aided, or helped, him.
1.5the water flowed—عَزَّ المَآءُ
.
1.5.1it discharged what was in it—عَزَّتِ القَرْحَةُ
. Said of a قرحة, that is, a wound or a pustule.
1.6she was narrow in the orifices of the teats—عَزَّتْ
maṣdar عُزُوزٌ and عِزَازٌ; and, according to IAar, عَزُزَتْ, maṣdar عُزُوزٌ. Said of a camel, and of a ewe or goat. Also اعزّت and تعزّزت.
she became scant in her milk—عَزُزَتْ
Said of a ewe or goat. [Of a very uncommon form; see دَمَّ, last sentence.] IKh, in the article on لب.
